I was introduced to this duo through the song "Punk's Dead", and I enjoyed the tongue-in cheek writing enough to check out some more of their music. With HEAVY JELLY, there are some tracks that continue this on the nose, comical writing, like "Bin Juice Disaster". This is probably the most enjoyable aspect of the album to me. The vocals are hit or miss for me, with the shouting sometimes feeling powerful, and other times ridiculous. The production is pretty standard ... read more
It's nothing all that special, although it does capture that summery vibe quite well.
While I can see how this may seem like a regression in both sound and ambition from "Melt My Eyez", I think it's commendable that Denzel is willing to make an album like this. I believe that it shows his skills better than if he made another album like "MMESYF". At first, the singles didn't seem all that amazing, with the exception of "HOODLUMZ", however listening to them within the context of the whole album makes them much better to me. The production ... read more
There's such a fun summery vibe to this song from the very start thanks to the production, the singing is great and adds a lot of personality to this song. The writing is solid, painting a scene of a relationship ending by mutual agreement for the betterment of both parties involved. Sonically, it's the equivalent of a feel-good movie, and lyrically, it's something more grounded and personal, it's a mix of ideas that work well. This song succeeds in what it sets out to do, ... read more
This has some of Denzel's most energetic performances, and the whole project is short enough that it never gets boring. That being said, there's something about the production here that seems off for me, I can't put my finger on it, perhaps because it reminded me so much of albums such as Madvilliany, which might have taken away some of the identity of the EP.
Haven't listened to much country music, but this is a solid album, not mind-blowing or anything, but solid all around.
It's a decent example of modern conscious British hip hop. The production is great, and the rapping is good, even if it is a little generic. The writing is strikingly honest here as well, and adds a level of personality to many of these songs.
One of the most powerful songs of the year, this is the first Backxwash song I've heard of, and I'm very impressed. Lyrically, each phase of the song is extremely well written and brutal, and then different production styles throughout adds so much and makes this song stand out a lot. I expect it to grow on me over time.
Very excited for the album, didn't love the first two singles as much others did, but with this song I'm fully on board. I love the energy this song carries from beginning to end.
Sampha is such a great singer, and the Little Simz verse works so well in the context with the song, even if it is a little short.
Was hoping I'd like this album and it just didn't click for me, Clairo's voice is great, and probably the highlight of the whole album. Perhaps if I return to this album with a different mindset, I'd enjoy it more, but as it stands, this album doesn't seem like one that'll stick with me at all.
This album is phenomenal and enchanting, Flores' singing glides over the incredible production. The grainy and old-school style of production here also elevates the album and adds so much atmosphere to these songs. It's strange how much everything about these songs make it sound like the album has always existed, like I could imagine people 50 years ago listening to this, it's magical.
This is an expertly crafted album, the production feels classy, and the whole album feels representative of the cover art. The album goes on a little too long for me, not that any one song feels out of place.
It sounds like if you took a regular pop album, and threw it into a blender. Really cool and unique listen, and really ahead of its time, honestly could have been made today and nobody would really bat an eye.
Thanks @mrmerle for the recommendation!
There are a lot of ideas at play here, and not all of them work for me, I think that the vocal effects at times can be a little off-putting, and break some of the flow of the album. That being said, this album creates a certain atmosphere that I've seen no other album create. The sound of the album is wholly unique to anything else I've ever heard, and I think that's to the album's credit.
This EP isn't anything special, and it can get a bit boring by the end. That being said, I think Chenayder has a lot of potential to make something really good in the future, her singing is great here and probably the highlight of the whole project for me.
Not being familiar with the original song, it's hard to judge this song as a cover. That being said, this song is still pretty good, the singing is nice, and the song manages to sound like you're in the same room as someone you know playing guitar. Obviously it's a little rough around the edges, but this is decent.
