Phil Elverum has the ability to take the simplest of concepts, and transform it into something truly breathtaking. This is one of the best examples of that ability.
This went on about 20 minutes too long, but other than that, I enjoyed this album. I've been fairly familiar with KAYTRANADA's work for a while now, hearing his production on albums such as Ravyn Lenae's "Hypnos", but I've never listened to a full project from him. I have to say, I thought that this was really good. KAYTRANADA'S production really is next level here, and lends well to multiple genres. This, in addition to the number of solid features means that at no point did this ... read more
Listened to this thing with a big stupid grin on my face the whole time, one of the most fun albums of the year.
I feel like I'm missing something, every song here is rated at least a 93, which is insane for an album this size. It just didn't click for me, the production here is obviously the highlight, and is incredible. But other than that, nothing really stood out to me. This is by no means a bad album, but I just don't see it as a 92.
Devastating is how I'd describe this, it's something I'm definitely not going to stop thinking about for the rest of the day.
I have no idea what this is, but I love it. This entire album is one explosion of sound from beginning to end with no room to breathe. The way rap, electronic, metal and even hyperpop manage to come together so well is nothing short of a miracle. Every song on here is a highlight, I can see this being one of my favourite albums of the year, if not my favourite. This album wouldn't work nearly as well if it wasn't for the powerful delivery and performance, as it really brings a very emotionally ... read more
Fantastic, great production and, (for the most part) great writing.
"Film" is undoubtedly the best song on here for me. This album is insanely creative, and shows off Aphex Twin's strengths as an artist. However I left this album wanting more, feeling like I was just getting a quick glimpse at what Aphex Twin can do as an artist, instead of a full exploration of his skills. Nowhere near a bad album, just not as good as I feel like it could have been.
Given Mount Eerie's very stripped back style of music, many of his songs can run the risk of sounding repetitive. That isn't really the case here though, considering this is also a collaborative project and makes this album feel fresh. Another thing I like about Mount Eerie's music is that it feels timeless in its simplicity. This album specifically is fantastic, with the extremely delightful vocals and instrumentals. This gives the album a very comforting atmosphere. If I had some complaints ... read more
Really interesting and unique, especially for the time it came out. It doesn't feel right labeling one genre to this album, as it borrows from so many. I did find my interest waining a little towards the end of the album, but there's no doubt the inspiration and impact this album had on future noise and industrial albums.
Yeah, this did nothing for me, everything just sounds half-baked here, not terrible, just nothing.
This is what Armand Hammer does best, great rapping and incredible writing over really unique and interesting production.
83 --> 90
Probably my favourite album from them, every song hits.
This song didn't click for me the first few times, but I've just had it stuck in my head for ages and it's grown on me massively since then.
So, I knew NOTHING about twenty one pilots before going into this album, so I have no idea how it fits into the band's whole narrative, the only song I had listened to from them before was the one they did for Suicide Squad, and I remember liking that song when it came out. So this is a completely new experience for me.
Overcompensate:
I liked the siren sound at the start of the song, I think it does a good job at building atmosphere for the album. I thought the rapping was pretty good, but I ... read more
