Maria Peszek - Maria Awaria
72

Apparently this album's writing caused a lot of controversey in Maria Peszek's home country of Poland, specifically among right wing conservatives. Looking at the writing, it isn't too extreme, but I can see a few songs ruffling the feathers of some paticularly uptight individuals. Something I do want to point out which stuck out to me was how great the production was on some songs. It's slightly art pop, but there were also moments for example on track 2, where it almost ... read more

Karlheinz Stockhausen / Studio fรผr elektronische Musik des Westdeutschen Rundfunks, Kรถln - Gesang der Jünglinge · Kontakte
83

Very cool early experimental album with some cool artificial vocal manipulation on the opening track. I'm not sure how some of these sounds were made back in 1962, some of these sounds are more reminiscent of industrial music that wouldn't come for another 20 years. Insanely creative, and laid the groundwork for so many experimental albums to come.

Killah Priest - Rocket to Nebula
76

It's rare that someone makes an album this inventive nearly 30 years into their career. The fact that it's entirely drumless, gives the album a chance to embrace a number of different samples. Because of this you here "beats" made out entirely of vocal samples, minimalist electronic music, ambient and classical music, and taditional, regional "world" music. What I think is stopping this album from being truly great is, for one, some of the long spoken word samples ... read more

Mild Sorrow Integrated - Meadow Platinum, Vol. 3
74

Really interesting electronic album that slowly decays until it pretty much just becomes ambient by the end. I though the heavy use of samples on the first track but then them being almost non existent in the second was an odd creative choice though, it felt like the two songs didn't really go with each other at times. Still overall a pretty creatvie and cool album.

Forest Swords - Compassion
89

Really unique production, going for a combination of almost rustic, traditional sounding drums, with ambient synths and horns and glitchy elements to it. It's surprisingly effective at creating some compelling pieces of music. There's almost a music score quality to a lot of these tracks, with how grand so many of them feels. I also think the samples here were used really well and tastefully, sparse enough so that they were that much more effective when they appeared. It's clear ... read more

Arca - Arca
87

A giant change in tone from Arca, it's probably the most "normal" of her albums that I've heard from her so far. Something that shocked me at first was how methodical it felt, and how much the album was a departure of the collage sounding production of her previous albums and mixtapes. They're still there of course, it just isn't the vocal point of the album. thsi album also has Arca's vocals more present here than ever before, you could hear them on ... read more

Jak3 - September 1985 Hurricane Rain
95

This definitely scratches an itch, the way every single song here sounds so factured makes it sound like a broken, grainy cassette tape. It's heavy use of sampling actually works well with carrying the themes of reminiscence and nostalgia, it reminded me a bit of dds' "I'll Try Living Like This" with how completely unrelated and out there samples can come together to create something that sounds (somehow) cohesive. Similarly, the low-key rapping really works here, I can ... read more

The Olivia Tremor Control - Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume One
52

A strange combination of late 60s era pop music and electronic sound collages. Sometimes, the two aspects of the album can feel at odds with each other, and a lot of the more experimental elements, like the 11 minute songs can feel like they don't really go anywhere. Also they can drag the more pop-orientated stuff with it, where they sound pretty decent on there own, they become paradoxically less interesting the more experimentation is done with them. I can see an album like this being ... read more

Invariance - Wish You Well
91

Considering some of the names behind this album, I'm amazed this album doesn't have more eyes on it. It's way more soulful, jazzy and methodical than I was expecting, it's a combination of styles that works really well. A lot of the instrumental tracks sound phenomenal, you can pick apart each element of the songs here pretty easily and you can tell there is so much care being put into the music here. One of the best hidden gems of the year so far, really hope this blows up ... read more

Sunrise, Flowerfield - Dreams at Snowland
70

The production here is really good, but unfortunately this album also failed to grab my attention for the most part, outside of the final track, which was really great, going for a more ambient approach. Definitely a lot of interesting idea present here, and very different from anything else I've heard from Samlrc

Desofusiony - Y'Know What's Real/fallen black angels
80

Thanks @Astroma for sending me your new single!
The first track is way more fast-paced than anything I've heard from you before, the drum and bass elements work really well here, and I also feel like your rapping is a lot cleaner here, culminates in one of my favourite songs from you.
The second track was a lot more mellow, imo it's a little weaker than the first track, but I still enjoy the atmosphere this track creates, being purely an instrumental track.

Cรฉline Dessberg - Hödöö
77

Dessberg's singing is really good, and the production is super sleek, consisting of traditional sounding melodies and compositions. I see a lot of potential here, so I'm defnitely looking forward to anything she has coming up in the future, especially considering her recent single was great.

Jon Bap - Yesterday's Homily
63

A little too scattershot for me to call this album truly great, but I do think there are some great ideas present here. First of all, Jon Bap presents himself as a trully unique figure in soul music, his combination of jazz, fast-paced drumming, and sound collage makes for a formidable listen. I get that this album is supposed to be all over the place, but at the same time, I feel like none of the ideas present here are given enough time to fully develop, and feel a little half-baked as a ... read more

Jim White - Swallowtail
79

Going into this as a Marisa Anderson fan, I have to say, I think that Jim White's drumming is probably just as good as Anderson's guitar playing. Everything here is super well made, I think the added drums makes the music here sound a lot richer. The improvisational nature of the music here also means that it rarely gets boring, which is impressive for an album so stylistically straightforward.

Kluster - Klopfzeichen
76

Really interesting early industrial album, by today's standards, it can seem a little primitive, but there was also wasn't much out there that sounded like this at the time. I also think both tracks do somethwing pretty distinct from each other that stops the album from getting too repetitive.

The Cherry Point - Night of the Bloody Tapes
89

Surprisingly textured and ended up being a really interesting album. It is VERY noisy and abrasive, but there is also a lot of depth to what's present, it isn't loud for the sake of being loud, but this album also doesn't really hold your hand at any point. Definitely a style of music you either love or you hate.

Egberto Gismonti - Arvore
90

Outside of the first and seventh track, Gismonti doesn't really go for much experimentation, instead focusing on these gorgeous samba infused jazz tracks. The songs here are really well made, the compositions here aren't super in your face or catchy, managing to be pretty low-key while never being dull or ever falling into becoming background noise. Egberto Gismonti yet again proves himself to be one of the most talented and underrated artists I've heard in a while.

cLOUDDEAD - cLOUDDEAD
93

The rapping itself took some time to get used to, but this is one of the most unique rap albums I've listened to. There's a lot of different musical styles being used as influences here. It all culminates in an album that sounds so bizarre and not at all what I was expecting. Even though it is pulling from so many sources, I can't really compare this album to anything I've heard before. It's too busy to properly be called ambient, but it's also probably the most ... read more

Dude Central - i will love you, always.
86

Thank you @DudeCentral98 for sending me your album!
I mean, I don't know what to say, I hope you're doing better, and I hope things do get better for you in the future. This is a profoundly sad album and you approach the topics discussed in the album in an incredibly mature way, while retaining your blunt (in a good way) writing. I think both the guitar playing and the singing has improved a lot, the super lofi sound is still there and still sounds really great.

ใŠใจใผใ‘ใƒ“๏ฝžใƒ๏ฝž [Otoboke Beaver] - ใ„ใฆใ“ใพใƒ’ใƒƒใƒ„ [ITEKOMA HITS]
78

It's chaotic energy can be pretty infectious at times and the fact that it's a complete barrage of noise the whole way through is pretty respectable. It's a really good combination fo hardcore punk style guitars, and noise rock style drumming. The vocals also really sell what's being said, even if I can't understand it, you feel so much emotion and power behind everything.

On JID - God Does Like Ugly
"@Phiroman I think it comes down to a personal preference thing, my favourite JID tracks are the ones where he's the main focus throughout. Not saying he can't bounce off others well, but I think he really shines when it's just him rapping his heart out."
On JID - God Does Like Ugly
"@Phiroman I expected this album to be weaker than the forever story, but it's weaker in ways I wasn't expecting, if that makes sense? I appreciate him not trying to recapture the forever story's magic, instead stretching his legs and trying out different musical influences on some tracks. I think by "disappointed", I just mean that I wish this album was more consistent quality-wise. Also by "Not giving it his all" I was referring to the tracks where the features feel like they do a lot of heavy lifting, and JID is less present than I was expecting."
On Armand Hammer - Race Music
"@Phiroman I know they've collaborated before, but this is one of the first times they've come together to make an entire project with a shared vision. Because of this, there are ways they bounce off each other that would be refined over time. Their rapping abilities and writing are still really impressive."
