Gaerea - Coma

First of all the album artwork is vert cool and probably would look better without text. However, onto the album I am aware this was the first record with the new vocalist and having only listened to several songs before this era of the band I think I can say with Loss in mind this vocalist is definitely better for this style of music they are going for. Whereas for more black metal adjacent music I can see the appeal of the former vocalist. As for the music nothing on this record gave me a wow ... read more

Static Dress - Injury Episode
76

Until now, my only exposure to Static Dress was when they supported Spiritbox in 2022 and I remember really liking the bands energy but I never checked them out (poor from me tbf). I saw this album get great praise from everyone so I wanted to listen to it and i'm not quite sure what to think. There are definitely good tracks on here but some on here feel a bit too all over the place? Its hard to place my finger what doesn't quite click with me but I will relisten to this record soon ... read more

Loathe - The Things They Believe
75

Not quite sure what to write here. Its not what you expect after the album that put them on the map but still i'm not too in the know of ambient music but there definitely is a soundscape here that I enjoy. The ratings on this record don't really matter as much since every track smoothly goes into the next. Its an experience and id like to explore more records in this genre!

PRESIDENT - DOOM LOOP
82

Interesting one upon first listen, didn't quite grab me immediately like the previous singles but I appreciate how different this song is compared to the last. Definitely got better as the song went on. Looking forward for the album in September!

156/Silence - No Arms
83

I will agree that it does sound quite Thornhill but the original 156 sound that we all love is still here but with a change. the worst thing about the song is the fade-out but apart from that a good song. Can’t wait for the album this September!

Periphery - A Pale White Dot
82

Obsession had good parts but for a intro to an album it felt lacking. The heaviness of Subhuman to Blackwall was musical whiplash and to be honest Blackwall should of just been an instrumental interlude (though it mostly is anyway but still vocally interesting in a good way). What I can say Spencer vocally is top tier, this record being "short" by periphery standards still showcases for what sounds like his whole range and especially screaming wise Spencer will impress many. Quite a ... read more

TesseracT - Altered State
83

I listened to this album years ago and never came back to it except for the track retrospect. I always remembered this album being quite good and past me was right this is a great album. Especially for my first ever listen to TesseracT it got me in. Seen it over a lot of reviews on this website, "Great Prog album" and I really agree. Especially in comparison to War of being this album being far less aggressive than One and a lot more atmospheric I definitely like it. The vocals are ... read more

Thornhill - Mercia

Took me a very long time to listen to this song but finally I have. Atmosphere in this song is top quality and would fit nicely on bodies, almost annoyed that it didn't feature on the album as this definitely would have been one of the standouts

Boundaries - Death will follow me
87

Somehow heavier than the previous single. Boundaries are really going strength to strength, new mix is definitely noticeable but not a problem for me. Can't wait for the album

Sylosis - The Path
85

I really enjoyed this EP as a whole, but it did feel like 24 minutes so maybe a slight pacing problem. The songs are quite good but they do all sound the same, maybe except the final track which was a bit different but more or less the same song 5 times which if they were mediocre it would be bad but since they are good its not as bad? I don't know maybe if I gave the first couple of albums a listen maybe I would understand why new Sylosis is not looked on as positive as it should be

Periphery - Mr. God
84

It's weird having a periphery song so short but it is good, score will probably go higher after a couple more listens

Holding Absence - Whisper of A Dream
87

Back like they never left, though what I will say this song is nothing the band hasn't done before so hopefully the next single can be a bit different

Lorna Shore - Immortal
77

Despite having a strong start, the whole of the album can be summed up in the first 2 or 3 songs. There really is not much variance in this album. And to be perfectly honest it got boring fairly quickly and almost sounded to the t the same for some sections of these songs. CJ is a great vocalist but even here it seems too safe? Everything in this album feels very safe and to be fair this album is probably still better than most albums in this genre but I think that says more about the overall ... read more

Gaerea - Loss
86

This being my first Gaerea album I know probably is not the best example of their sound as a whole but this was very good. I had listened to Submerged when it came out and had it on repeat ever since, apart from the choruses of the rest of the singles I had never heard in their entirety but they ended up being the best on the album. With the only real standouts from the singles being the opening and closing songs respectively and the surprisingly good interlude track before Nomad. Uncontrolled ... read more

Vildhjarta - måsstaden under vatten
86

As my first experience with thall this definitely was an experience. The atmosphere in the album is so dark and cold which really helps with the start to finish experience with this record. The mix and production is quite good and the instrumentation is technical enough to confuse your brain with strange time signatures throughout. One thing I will say the run time does feel like 80 minutes of music and the slow nature of the genre makes it feel like 2 hours but for this type of downtempo ... read more

Knocked Loose - Hive Mind

Good song, need more crossovers like this

thrown - EXCESSIVE GUILT
80

I'm glad this album is only 20 minutes as this type of sound should never be extended longer than 30 minutes. Don't get me wrong this album is heavy and is perfect for the gym and definitely goes crazy live but their is not much variety here. Once you've heard maybe two of the eleven tracks you've basically heard them all, I understand this type of music or this genre you can't really stray away from the traditional beatdown sound but it gets very samey towards the end ... read more

STARSET - WE ARE EMPIRE

6 Minutes that feels like 4 is always good. Provided this is all based on one listen but I'm not too sure about the mix, felt like quite a lot space, which maybe just for Starset standards that's not normal but felt a bit empty in spaces. The song is decent, I think the fact the band in terms of just having heavy sections for a 2nd verse into the 2nd chorus, that deadlock being broken helps the songs in a good way. Thought it was catchy if not sounded like trailer music, at least for ... read more

Paleface Swiss - Chapter 1: From the Gallows
NR

There's having a raw sound then there's this. The fact this project sounds the way it does actually makes me like it much more than I should, I like to imagine the band knew this sounded like shit so they just released it anyway as a joke because there's no way in 2018 this got quality approved unless they wanted this sound in which I may love this even more. The fact if you even gave this record half decent production or mix there's probably some decent beatdown music here ... read more

Unprocessed - Angel

Someone else made a comment how if the band went more into the grooves rather than the heavier elements this album would be a lot better. And to be fair I understand that critique a lot because tracks such as Beyond Heavens gate started with a lot of promise but didn't fulfil it's potential in the end and i'm not saying the heavier element don't work cause they do but more into the atmosphere and melodic grooves couldn't of hurt. This is only my 2nd Unprocessed album ... read more
