AOTY's favorite Album Openers

First impressions are key when it comes to albums. A good opener can really open your eyes and let the listener know what is in store for them, a bad opener, on the other hand, can put a bad taste in the listener's mouth and ruin the experience for them.

Which brings me to my question for my list: What is your favorite album opener of all time and why? (only choose one, and please give the artist, album, and song name)

Porter Robinson - Nurture
100
My pick:

I was incredibly scared when I first listened to this, as many of you know I hyped this album so much to the point where almost no album could live up to it. Thankfully, as soon as I heard porter's one vocal run in this song, I knew that this album was everything I wanted it to be.

The beautiful string sections, water-like plucks, glockenspiels, soft piano, light electronic instruments hug your ears as Porter open's up his Magnum opus, Nurture.

" It gives you a great idea of the gorgeous sound of the album and is in my opinion a flawless song."
Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
84
@MirroredComfort 's pick

"it sounds like a goodbye of some sort, although it is the beginning of the end for daft punk. besides being my favorite album of all time, random access memories is a huge ending statement and a regal, final goodbye to music as a whole and the otherworldly song was the perfect way to start the album."
Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
@August 's pick

@Cakenator 's pick
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
@StolenPosistions 's pick

" the album is one of my all time favorites and that opener, just like you mentioned, sets the tone for the entire thing. it’s an incredible track, imo one of the most memorable songs ever made and i love how it’s soulful but dark at the same time. incredible writing, production and it’s amy so the vocals are full of personality. it’s an iconic song."
The Avalanches - Wildflower
@Quet 's pick

"There might be a couple better Avalanches tracks, but this is easily the most essential."
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
@lorts986 AKA @cocoabeans 's pick

"s the most memorable opener on my recent memory, i love this one because Kanye just shows all of his potential, with some smooth melodies and iconic vocals, like "Can we get much higher? So high!" and then comes Gorgeous that is other excellent track. I know this can be very cliché of my part but it's just too good, i can't miss this opportunity!"
BROCKHAMPTON - SATURATION III
@reedy 's pick

@realrealweasel 's pick
Nujabes - Modal Soul
@TomBejoy 's pick

"Feather was a recent pick. It clearly isn't the finest song on the album, but the minimalism here is commendable. Nujabes drums are strong, the backing chords that come in over the course of the track are heavenly, the sampled melody is given a new set of wings not present on the original. The two rappers from CYNE absolutely eat their verses, and the song keeps on getting better on every front down the record"
Kanye West - ye
50
@PizzaGrande 's pick
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
@marvelgaryen 's pick

"there's simply no better opening in the HISTORY of albums than this one, is one of the most fucking fantastic tracks ever."
Slint - Spiderland
@Mozart 's pick

"Once I heard McMahan's screaming, I knew the album clicked on me. Song is just greatest roller-coaster I've taken a ride."
Porter Robinson - Worlds
100
@Freddysam 's pick
Daft Punk - Discovery
85
@EraX 's pick

"Everything about this song is great. But if I have to pick something out it's the very incredible sampling of "More Spell On You" by Eddie Jones, which is incorperated into the song in a very elegant and unique way that was unheard of in the house scene at the time."
Depeche Mode - Music for the Masses
@depechemode4lif 's pick

"It is still one of the most powerful openers I have ever heard, esspecially towards the end of the track. The angelic choir and huge production really sets the stage for the album."
Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
70
@BaddieBaphomet 's pick

"It’s a very minimal track; for most of its runtime it’s carried by just a low drone, clipping drums and percussion, and very understated vocals, relying on the most primal of musical elements - there isn’t even really a melody until the final minute with some fuzzy, dissonant major 7th chords sawing through on the guitar. However, “City Song” uses it minimalism to create a harrowing soundscape and a terrible sense of dread that something very bad is about to happen, perfectly setting up a visceral and terror inducing experience like no other that plays out during the duration of “You Won’t Get What You Want”."
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
@TheNerdyNerd201 's pick

"Arguably one of the greatest songs of all time from an absolute legend. It’s pretty, dreamy and feelings of melancholy. It was really close though with “Hunter” by Bjork and “Liquid Swords” by GZA in second and third."
Malcolm Archer - J.S. Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988
@Flamingooooo

"The most beautiful classical piece I’ve found so far🌸
perfect as an opener to this splendid musical experience which this album is!"
Fall Out Boy - Folie A Deux
80
@BGL13 's pick

"i love the change in dynamics and the song has a very important part in my life"
Joji - Nectar
82
@Mattsreviews 's pick
MF DOOM - MM.. FOOD
@rater ‘s pick
Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
@murdoc66 ‘s pick

“Perfect opener for the dark, brooding and atmospheric album that Turn On The Bright Lights is. This track encapsulates the overall sound of the album really well imo so if this track hits you, the rest of the album will also click, likely.“
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
@ihavebadtaste 's pick
"was hooked to lcd soundsystem the moment i first heard this song"
Billie Eilish - WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
72
@OZYMVNDIAS 's pick

" It draws you in with an eerie clicking sample, then a voice talking about invisalign or something. This obviously indicates that the cost of dental care is too much and needs to be deducted so that more people can smile. If you have a keen enough eye, you can clearly tell that Billie's previous EP was titled, "dont smile at me", which, since Billie is a very popular person and meets a bunch of people every day, would illustrate the lack of availability for dental care due to stupidly high costs. This small message for dental care to be more available to the whole community is an extremely splendiferous way to start the album."

EDITORS NOTE: what the fuck.
The Oral Cigarettes - Kisses And Kills
@Shyne 's list

"it’s not something a lot of people have heard, but i just really like how hype it is, gets me going every time, and the way that the instrumentation develops or brings something different throughout the song is just super cool, and again, gets me going. love it."
Cheng Bi - 我想和你虚度时光 (I want to waste time with you)
@eliiscool5

"The song is extremely well-written, and its acoustic feel kickstarts the start of a really good album."
Fever Ray - Fever Ray
@Royster 's pick
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
@mothalice 's pick
Brand New - Daisy
@midnightbabe ‘s pick
Mac Miller - Circles
@forgetaboutme 's list

"It's a very gentle track that sets the tone for the entire album. It also gives a glimpse of Mac's state of mind when he made the album. The background acrostics paired with Mac's voice makes you forget about the rest of the world and washes away all stress and making you longing for more of the album."
