Alternative Trap is just a gorgeously trippy mixtape, and I think it deserves every accolade it gets to this day. LUCKI knocked it out of the park on here, as songs like Cocaine Woman, Alternative Trouble, and Alternative Outro are highlights some artists WISH they had in their entire discographies. LUCKI's sleepy and introspective verses on this tape are fantastic, though I struggle to call them the highlight because of just how incredible this project's beats are. They create an ... read more
The Sun's Tirade is such a colorful album, and if it weren't for it's oftentimes dark subject matter I'd say it's quite a pleasant listen too. Isaiah Rashad's flows and the jazzy beats on this project are just smooth as butter and groovy as hell. I would shoot this album's lofi production into my veins if I could. It contrasts extremely well to this outing's reflective lyricism, and it really makes this project just that much more memorable. Sure, ... read more
I wasn't really expecting much going into Nine Inch Noize considering how remix albums tend to usually go, but this project is a spectacular exception from the norm. It keeps the spirt of the original tracks alive whilst converting them into more synth-heavy maximalist versions of themselves, and I think that's awesome! Though, beyond the absolutely bonkers production from Nine Inch Nails and Boys Noize, Trent's vocals are obviously great and I love that they decided to remix ... read more
I think The Slip is a pretty underrated Nine Inch Nails album all things considered. The production is dark and full of grit, and Trent is as memorable of a voice as he always is. His writing is always one of the highlights on any project he's involved in, and on The Slip his lyricism is just as affective despite it's more ambient tendencies. All of that's not to say everything Trent and Atticus did on this album clicked with me 100%. I think there are a couple dull bits on here, ... read more
I've been meaning to get around to M.I.A. for a while, and while I've seen the hole she's dug for herself in recent years, it seems that she at least HAD the ability to make great songs because Arular is full of them. Some of the choices made in the production of this album can rub me the wrong way like on songs such as Pull Up the People and U.R.A.Q.T., but for the most part the beats on this project are absolutely fantastic and wonderfully experimental. Though, it would be a ... read more
Superbloom is pretty good all-around, but it's definitely a bit less compelling than Jessie Ware's past couple projects. In both sound and style it feels like an amalgamation of her last two albums. Don't get me wrong, disco and dance pop still sound fantastic on Jessie, but I think there's a conversation to be had about how unambitious and generic this project can get at points. At the very least this album is a lot less dynamic than her past work, and it doesn't ... read more
It's not crazy amazing or anything, but I feel like I'm listening to a different song than the majority of people reviewing this?
Did not a single person in the studio have the courage to tell Julian to ease up on the autotune?
To be honest, I've never even heard of smokedope2016 before seeing this project's cover pop up on this website about a week ago. Luckily, the cover and genre tags alone were enough to get me to listen to this album. It really didn't take me very long to come to love this release. I mean, I love cloud rap and I love psychedelia, so an album like THE COMEDOWN is right up my alley. This project's atmosphere is just so memorable and entrancing. It's hazy, airy, and so damn ... read more
I know it's odd that I'm listening to Kanye West's trilogy out of order, but the synths on this album were calling to me. Though, Graduation being Kanye's most discussed and acclaimed release in the public conscience certainly helped push me to giving it a listen. Anyways, this album rocks! I can see why it's his most popular outing to date, because it's really one banger after another for the most part. It's not quite my favorite release from Kanye, because ... read more
Thundercat is finally back with a new album, and it might be his best release yet. At the very least, Distracted is his most consistent project to date. Smooth vocals and slick bass guitars are guaranteed to appear on pretty much any Thundercat release, but they're especially exceptional on this album. They permeate throughout each track and breathe life into the catchy and charming lyricism on here. This project is wonderfully groovy and spacey, and while that may be nothing new from ... read more
It's been a while since I've given a New Order album a true listen, and I'm glad I've finally gotten around to giving Technique a shot because it may be one of if not their best album all-around. This project just sounds so far ahead of it's time. It's miles from anything anyone else was doing at the time, and it's a phenomenal evolution of everything New Order had released earlier in the 80s. It's groovy, it's wistful, and it's full of bangers. ... read more
The Life of Pablo is a great album, but I think there's more misses on it than most would admit. It's a very personal outing, as it dived into Kanye's chaotic persona circa 2016 in all kinds of interesting ways. That's really the main focus of the entire album, and while I have my issues with this project, one thing I can't take away from it is that it nailed the curation of a compelling atmosphere and theme. Also, as a whole, it is just pretty damn cohesive. However, I ... read more
I like Slayyyter's past releases, but WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA blows them all out of the water in every way possible. It's dirty, grimy, and abrasive in all the best ways. Similar to her previous projects, this album survives on chaos, but it turns the dial up to 11 while keepings things cohesive. Slayyyter sounds thrives in this album's dark and sexually charged atmosphere, and while she's never been afraid of vulgarity, it works especially well alongside this project's ... read more
To put it simply, ADL is a mixed bag. I wish I could say it was this incredible album where Yeat took huge creative leaps akin to what he did with 2093, but I can't. I mean, Yeat DID experiment with his sound on this album, but it was to mixed results. Tracks like My Time and Went Wrong are spectacular deviations from Yeat's norm, but there's more than a handful of songs on here that go in one ear and come out the other. If this album was cut down to 12 or 13 songs it would ... read more
Slayyyter's self-titled mixtape is all over the place, but it's never dull. It's a chaotic mixture of accessible dance pop bangers and raunchy electroclash cuts that make even the most sex-positive amongst us flustered. While I think that the quality of each track varies wildly throughout this tape's runtime, the first half of this project is definitely the stronger one. That's not to say the second half doesn't have it's pop bops, but tracks like BFF, Mine, ... read more
