Decided to go and see where it started before going forward in his discography. While not nearly as good as the albums that followed it, as far as debut albums go it is still quite good. I honestly do not have all that much to say about this one, other than - aside from the title track - I do not see myself really coming back to this one for anything else. A solid entry to the discog, and worth checking out if you are a fan of Elliott's music.

I have sat looking at this screen in silence for almost 10 minutes. Nothing in this box but a blinking line, begging for me to type something, anything. But nothing comes out. The final minutes of this album have made me feel emotions that no other has evoked, I do not even know how to describe it. It isn't fear, or sorrow, or even a cathartic release. I just don't know. I went into this record not knowing what to expect, and now I leave, not knowing what to say.

Off the bat, the MF DOOM influence is quite apparent, in both the production and lyrical performance. From the almost lo-fi production, to the use of audio clips from old movies and television, to the flows and rhyme schemes, it feels very much like a DOOM record in spirit. This being said, Hermit and the Recluse still makes for one of the most unique and interesting hip hop experiments to come out of the lab these last few years.
