I'm not a lyrics person, at least on a first listen. To that end, I think a lot of these quiet mumbly vocal indie acoustic guitar albums are lost on me. I can't extract much from such sparse musical composition.
That said, the first track on this album, In Lightning, is AWESOME. I was so pumped, thought this was going to be a really unique album...only to be disappointed by two completely generic follow-up songs. Snoozefest. Then a bit more originality on track 4, Hiding Out in the Open. Some nice vocal effects and a bit more variety than a sparsely strummed acoustic guitar. Borrow Trouble is another highlight for me.
I guess I can understand why people like this singer-songwriter type of indie sound but to me this type of album blends into the background. But what annoys me about this album is that some of these songs (i.e. In Lightning, Borrow Trouble) are a demonstration of what a more rich and layered musical composition can add to a song. It's like she tried on about a quarter of these songs, but said fuck it and just belted out the rest in a quick studio session the week before the album was pressed.
