Poppy - Am I A Girl?

Poppy! Wow thanks for saving this miserable week in music. 11/9 was easily the worst week for music this year and I’m glad it’s over. Yeah it came out on Halloween and I’m a bit late to it but this album truly shocked me with how good it is. Poppy managed to create some of the catchiest synth pop of the year with also some heavy metal infused towards the end. Her lyrics are hilarious for a good amount of this album as well as just sporting a really upbeat vibe. Notably on the song “Chic Chick” where Poppy proclaims “I’m a chic chick, if you don’t like it suck my dick!” This album is absurdist pop done to the best degree and is so easy to get on board with while adding a lot to the lore of this character that has been propped up. Poppy has essentially played the system by looking and acting like a robot like prototype of a pop star. “Iconic” sounds like something right out of Ariana Grande’s playbook, except preformed with much more personality and believability. And about a third of the way through we are played this nightmarish first interlude which sounds like a short little PC music produced post-industrial piece with Poppy saying her iconic “I’m Poppy.” phrase. “Time Is Up” is an apocalyptic EDM style song disguised as just another pop song. Poppy sings about “the factory, the sterile place they made me” with this chorus about the negative effects that humans have left on the planet and how it will eventually lead to our down fall. She strait up sounds like a psychopath singing “Your life is meaningless, you’re all cockroaches. Extermination is your only hope.” and this absurdity just makes it one of the most enjoyable and entertaining pop albums to come out in a while. “Aristocrat” is crazy catchy with it’s sparkly bumping beat and fairytale like imagery. This song is essentially Poppy’s Cinderella story with the background knowledge that she used to sneak into parties but acted like so much of an “aristocrat” that she blended right in. Speaking of catchy, “Girls in Bikinis” is that and then some. I’ve been humming the chorus non-stop the past few days “Girls in bikinis, girls in bikinis in outer space, in roller skates.” And now here is where the insanity really starts on the album with the title track “Am I a Girl?” I shocked when I heard the guitars in the chorus but it blended well into the track and thought it would just be a one off, well I was wrong. Because the next song “Play Destroy” is just strait heavy metal to begin and it’s not cheap either. The guitars are genuinely mixed really well given the pop environment they are trying to manifest in and works into the absurd nature of this album. The amount of cognitive dissonance that this song created is what made it so jarring but of course she steps it up one finally notch on the closing song “X”. In this song there’s no real transitions between the metal and the pop it’s just one at 100% followed by the other and it’s hilariously ridiculous. Overall, I really like this album. It’s the exact thing I was hoping for Poppy to pursue mixed in with a few other cool ideas and some of the catchiest songs of the year.
