This is a project filled with fresh, interesting songs. Production carries the album throughout, but there are plenty of lyrical and melodic moments on almost every track to bolster each track even further. This heavily processed sound works extremely well for Britney Spears’ thinner vocal style.
A pleasant and easy listen all the way through. Queen Latifah’s voice is smooth and surprisingly sprawling.
Overpowered feels like a shinier, more polished sister to Ruby Blue. In that evolution comes a sacrifice of some charm but what is gained is bombast and pop brilliance. There are musical motifs that now feel indicative of Rosin Murphy’s sound that have been cemented on this project, and there are layers and layers of production and lyricism to nibble on for a while. The only major downside to the project is that there is no connective tissue. It feels like these songs could be in any ... read more
Very twee, sometimes brilliantly so. The first and last track are standouts for sure, but there is a real sense of musical theatre throughout much of the album. It’s difficult to say if that is a good or bad thing.
Some strong singles and a largely inoffensive record. Pretty solid pop album.
Nothing terrible but really nothing memorable. The midi instruments are terrible but forgivable if the songs were stronger. Title track is great but nothing else lives up to it.
Despite starting off strong with Girlfriend, this album lacks teeth and depth. While Avril Lavigne seems to have a melodic gift for ballads, the lyrics are less enticing than older ballads. For the upbeat pop punk fare, very little lands melodically or lyrically. There is an inescapable feeling that Avril Lavigne is dressing up as pop punk instead of this being the image she really aligns with.
Despite a couple gems the full project is a complete misfire. Bad mixes, cringey raps and a failed attempt at some sort of through-narrative.
Exciting updates on old songs and entrancing arrangements create an engaging and enjoyable live album here. Madonna’s vocals are hit or miss but we don’t come to Madonna for incredible vocals. Solid across the board.
A beautiful project, elevated by the writing and vocal stylings of Amy Winehouse. There’s a richness and ease of tone that without effort or pretence demands all attention be paid to it. A couple songs are a bit weaker, but across the board this is an incredible body of work.
What a drop off…abysmal writing and production across the board bar a couple of tracks. Vocals feel forced and again, the writing is just that bad.
A polished and focused album. Brimming with sex appeal and only occasionally missing the mark on that front.
Almost deranged in how versatile and sprawling the soundscape of this album is. Fergie steps fully into the limelight while still finding support from the Black Eyed Peas. It’s just the right amount, and it’s clear how much of a star both Fergie and will.i.am. are. The album is always interesting and you never really know what’s coming up next.
Understood approximately 50 words and I loved every one of em. Exceptional stuff
If Bjork’s Joga and Madonna’s 00s discography had a baby. Interesting chord sequences in several songs, beautiful melodies and just the right hint of 90s influence in the production.
Broad in scope, this album stays interesting throughout. While the singles are clearly the highlights of the album, there’s enough going on in most of the album cuts too. A couple duds but still sounds surprisingly fresh. Production often sounds expensive and sleek.
With a few standout tracks, I’m Not Dead is a decent effort from P!NK. She spends a lot of the album telling us how different she is from the rest of the pop girls while treading sonically similar ground to many of them. A couple songs are self-indulgent and drawn out but the standouts really do stand out.
