AOTY 2023
The National - Laugh Track
Okay, The National. I appreciate that you all took decided to take cooking classes. You are now allowed back in the kitchen.
Better Lovers - God Made Me An Animal
i would let this ep raw dog me in the most nightmarish, filthy Denny's parking lot and i mean that will every molecule of my being
009 Sound System - 009 Sound System
Happy 1000th album Sylvia.

Choosing what album I wanted to listen to for my 1000th rating was a bit harder of a choice than I thought it'd be. I'd already chosen what is probably the most important album to me for my 500th rating; the first album I'd actually heard in full by complete accident containing the first song I learnt all the words to and remember hearing. So what could I do to top that?

Then I remembered how long I've been waiting to write a full on nostalgia-indulgence review ... read more

파란노을 [Parannoul] / Asian Glow / Sonhos Tomam Conta - Downfall of the Neon Youth
first full project i've heard from any of these artists and after listening i have concluded i REALLY need to hear more asian glow - i love their really raw and noisy emo aesthetic. i also think sonhos' sudden breaks into just black metal screeches are also fucking awesome and they contrast insanely well with the muddy, noisey shoegaze that she seems to have made a sound out of. not too sold on parannoul yet but i think they definitely had great chemistry with the other artists here and ... read more
boygenius - the record
my sad gay heart
The St Pierre Snake Invasion - Galore
what charlise said (this has some tinges of mathy stuff influence and some huge riffs it is very cool and damien sayell is such a badass vocalist)
Maruja - Knocknarea
holy shit I'm gonna cum
Snapcase - Progression Through Unlearning
props to this guy for having the lung capacity that he does but i doubt he got said lung capacity just to scream one note over and over again
HMLTD - The Worm
Sounds like some guy decided to have a conversation with bcnr, black midi and scott walker with alt-j playing in his right ear to finish off the last part to his 75% conceived crack opera and I am completely here for it. The influences sound like minor tweaks and additions to a very naturally batshit insane sound. I be up charging my worm to this shit.
SHINER - The Egg
someone once said that the genre spacegrunge sounds like a cigarette brand. i agree and i think this band really push that description,
Q and Not U - No Kill No Beep Beep
i fucking wish i could write riffs like these so bad holy SHIT
Say Anything - Hebrews
A bit corrosive to start off with with some very annoying post-self-titled era Say Anythingisms but as the tracklist goes on and Max starts adding a bit more nuance into the songs rather than awkwardly half-screeching, the album becomes a bit more genuine and is the most personal album Say Anything has written since Is A Real Boy even if a few of the songs feel like a not as good take on Yellow Slash Red Cat. I'd agree in that it's probably overhated but it's still a long shot from any of the ... read more

Part 4/25: ????

The reason that there are a bunch of question marks instead of a semi-funny one liner for this review is that I'm left a bit dumbfounded. I found this album very high up on the rym post-grunge charts, heard a single song that had this awesome weird spin on dream pop with a whistle register chorus and thought that considering the Richard D James album-level album cover, ... read more

City and Colour - The Hurry and the Harm
Dallas telling me he wants everyone in California to die in a bushfire or an earthquake in the most crystalline voice like he was an angel sent from the above to deliver this message is both hilarious and terrifying.
twenty one pilots - twenty one pilots
This band's track record with me is fucking sad LMAO. They were what got me and my horrible manipulative ex talking and then my friend became a twenty one pilots fan and would bring them into every single fucking conversation and talk about their music like how Marvel fans talk about the movies. Didn't help that he was also THAT kind of Marvel fan.

Well there goes all of my positive ratings for this band except for Trench.

Arab Strap - The Week Never Starts Round Here
The Week Never Starts Around Here is fucking bleak. Over and over through the slow, stringy guitars there seems to be a man who is dying to say that you can only scream love is real so many times before you end up in the same pub on a Sunday night drinking from the same fucking mug with the same brand of shitty beer in it feeling the same shitty feelings you were the last time you were at the godforsaken place. Screaming love is real is too bold of a concept for this album anyway - it's more ... read more
Hot Water Music - Forever and Counting
This reminds me a LOT of Taking Back Sunday and I'm seriously thinking this album was an inspiration for TBS - these vocals are literally just WOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH x50 over some pretty cool but also stiff riffing with somewhat flat but also neat production - which both works to make it sound very raw and expressive but also incredibly 2-dimensional at the same time.
Saron Gas - Fragile
Crazy how this is way better than the debut in most ways especially since it feels so raw and Shaun Morgan doesn't sound bored out of his mind here - there even are some straight up downtempo songs on here that aren't half bad and Tied My Hands might be the best song this band ever released.
