Shawn Mendes drops a good album. That sentence alone should make the world end. So yea,people were expecting him to make something better then his older stuff and he did,he finally evolved from being just "a guy with a guitar". Sure,sure,this gets carried by the vocals and production,since his writing is still ass,but at least he broke through his limit and redeemed himself as an artist. What he clearly lacks is the ability to create good constant atmospheres that can maintain themselves in the entirety of his record,and it doesn't seem like this improves much on it. I'm really sure he would make a great record if he would fix that tiny important problem. The other obvious flaw he still showcases as an artist are his bad goddamn writing and the complete scarcity of an artistic vision. It's not serious at all.

On the other side,what he successfully does here improve him as an artist by a mile. Whilst he can't create consistent atmospheres,that does not mean he can't a create a great ocasional one. Tracks like "Call My Friends" , "Higher" , "Wonder" and even the intro clearly prove that. Obviously ,that's a double-edged sword,since that also means it will result in a very hit or miss experience ,and it does. Other then all of that,the rest are somewhat just scratching the surface and he still keeps it on a safe level,delivering some legit good pop tunes. Is it a great album? Not really. Is it his most important? Yes,to him,as an artist,at least. He shows potential after years of being a bland pop mess.

Sadly,this gets held back by the very underwhelming hit or miss situation it makes,as well as the lack of good writing,most of the songs being related to only love,which i'm sure we never heard of before. Seems like the new releases so far all follow the same disappointing route, bad or good.
