Mach-Hommy - Pray For Haiti
85

I have been critical in the past about this album and, while I still think other Mach-Hommy projects deserved more love than what this one got, I've come around Pray for Haiti. I think a Folie Á Deux specifically gets overrated, but some of these songs are undeniable. Having gotten more used to Mach's style since doing my first listen to this last year (my first Mach album listen), I've grown to appreciate almost every song here. Some of the Haitian's best are here: ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - Wolf
81

Like a lotta people, I had my Tyler, the Creator phase, and it wasn't just a little enjoyment for him - I was ADDICTED to the music. Now that that intense love has died off a bit I can give a more far review of this project and, though it's still hard to not put my bias and personal liking into the review, this is still a great project. It's very often classified as just teenager music but there are so many redeemable qualities in this project. Tyler really improve in this ... read more

Rome Streetz x The Artivist - Joyeria
89

One of the most underrated albums I've ever listened to. This pre-Griselda Rome Streetz is so insanely hungry, he's nearly insulting you in these songs but there's something about the ambient this production and feature list create that's so intriguing. It's such a consistent album, it's truly a compilations of hidden gems. If you like Rome Streetz, you'll love this. Alpha Bay, Discretion, Vagabonds Don't Die, Run Da Jewelz, Formation of Mental Objects, ... read more

Rome Streetz - KISS THE RING
89

After over a year of sitting with this album and exploring Rome's catalog, Kiss The Ring has fully clicked for me. This is one of the greatest rappers of this decade rapping on an amazing set of beats assembled by the flyest man alive himself.

A$AP Rocky - LIVE.LOVE.A$AP
91

A young, hungry and catchy A$AP Rocky just killing it over a multitude of hazy, dreamy, psychedelic and addictive beats by mostly Clams Casino. The fact over half the tracks have an argument to be made to be this album's best says a lot. If you're a rap fan, this is a must-listen. If you argue this album isn't good because of a lack of deep and introspective lyricism, learn to have some fun in life. Keep It G is my favourite song, but it's pretty much tied with 5 others. ... read more

Westside Gunn - HEELS HAVE EYES 2
83

This is Westside Gunn's best album since Pray for Paris. This is the project he mastered this more modern sound of his. It's great track after great track, with there only being, in my opinion, 3 sub-par songs (excluding intros/outros). Mandela seems to get the most love, and it's an amazing performance by sample over this addicting sample flip by Conductor Williams, but songs like HEEL CENA, PRICK and AUNT GINA show some great growth from Gunn. I love Brother Tom Sos' ... read more

Earl Sweatshirt - Doris
95

This is a modern classic, I don't care. Earl has been through many phases, but there's something special about this one, prior to his depression. That's not to say he's just goofing around here - songs like Chum and Sunday are extremely dark and introspective, respectively, but the overall vibe is a whole lot easier to digest and appreciate for the average person. It's a bunch of dope beats with even doper bars by Earl, who at this point is starting to become even more ... read more

Westside Gunn - FLYGOD
92

I wish everyone could one day get an ear for music like this, they're missing out.

Earl Sweatshirt - Some Rap Songs
96

this album cannot be put to words.

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Piñata
92

One of the greatest producer-rapper collabs in hip-hop history. What Madlib did here, specifically, will easily go down in history as a production masterclass, and that's not to discredit Freddie in the slightest. Not a single feature misses and it's not like Freddie's performance are very lacking in variety - he doesn't just do coke talk - contrary to the stereotypes: he tackles family problems, his upbringing and regrets. Amazing album, belongs in every 2010s hip hop ... read more

Westside Gunn - Hitler Wears Hermes 8: Side B
88

Only Gunn would have 2 songs as intros. If we're talking the sheer amount of amazing songs in a single Gunn project, this might take the cake. It's rare you see a Westside Gunn album - or Griselda, in general, over one hour but boy does it pay off. Legendary performances here production and feature-wise, this being probably the greatest stack of contributions in a Griselda album. Only a few skips here I'd say, if those were trimmed off this could've been a perfect. Also I ... read more

Joey Bada$$ - B4.DA.$$
89

Joey's most underrated project. If you like 1999, you'll like this. Joey's rap is of the highest-level, and the production is fantastic. It's crazy how many songs get overlooked here. Over 1 hour long, but it really barely misses. There's a song for everybody here, whether you like his aggressive rapping, emotional songs, artist chemistry, lyrical exercises or you're just searching for some awesome production. Paper Trail$, Piece of Mind, Hazeus View, Christ ... read more

Westside Gunn - Supreme Blientele
92

IT'S HIS BEST. There are very little skips, and some of the highest highs of his career in here, such as Elizabeth, Brossface Brippler, The Steiners, Amherst Station, Wrestlemania 3000 and Brutus. Amazing features and production, thanks to the contribution of Anderson.Paak, Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss, Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine, CRIMEAPPLE, Pete Rock and Elzhi, just to name a few. Excluding intros and outros, I don't see any big problems with any track.

90

Westside Gunn's most accessible album, for sure. Some all-timer songs here, and this is probably the most consistent album of his and arguably the only one you could consider skipless, as Gunn tends to always have 1 or 2 below average songs in every release. All of the features do an amazing job here, the production is of the highest level and songs such as Euro Step include some of Gunn's best rapping in his career. An amazing gateway to anybody wanting to get into the underground, ... read more

Joey Bada$$ - 1999
94

Could very well be the greatest mixtape of our generation. It's pure, animated and skilled rapping over modern boom bap beats anyone could fall in love with. Truly one of the most fun albums to listen to from what I've heard, and it's also a fantastic lyrical showing. Joey and the rest of the Pro Era features go off on every single track, with standout performances from Capital Steez - Rest in Peace.

Tyler, The Creator - Goblin
65

Once you leave that edgy phase where you love this album, the flaws become very evident. It's a mess of shock-value chasing lyrics on top of a very all over the place production though, to be fully honest, is way better than people make it out to be. You can tell modern Tyler was an evolution of this era, and this version of him already showed the capability of making amazing songs. Sure, most of these well-made songs are thrown out the window by the delivery and writing aspects, but I ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - IGOR
94

This album overtime has gained its due recognition, but let's not forget about the fact this is, indeed, one of the greatest showings of growth by an artist ever. I'm obviously not giving it a better rating due to the start of Tyler's career, but it's worth noting. Though not really a hip-hop album, it's one of the best albums made by a hip-hop artist of the 2010's with an amazing concept, beautiful instrumentation and flawless delivery. You could argue not a ... read more

MF DOOM - MM..FOOD
96

Just as good as the classic that is Madvillainy. While maybe not as impressive and complex as the often considered magnum-opus, it regains its points by the accessibility and just overall fun aspect of the album. Timeless production and lyrics from DOOM.

Madvillain - Madvillainy
98

Possibly my favourite album ever - I'm still just as amazed by it as I was on first listen. MF DOOM's lyricism here is insane and Madlib makes an all-timer performance. Every song here holds a special place in my heart.

Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city
97

I do think this album is slightly less culturally important and perfected than To Pimp A Butterfly, but just by a small amount. I do give a very very very slight edge to it over TPAB due to the replay value, which is arguably one of the best in the genre's history. This album is masterpiece, after masterpiece, after masterpiece. Maybe a few songs I'm not as into such as "Real", but it's still a great song nonetheless. You can be a casual listener or a die-hard, ... read more
