Boris - Pink

Why didn’t they play this in the Barbie movie?
Justin Timberlake - Everything I Thought It Was
43
I cannot fucking stand how sexy Justin thinks his voice is on those first few tracks. It actually makes me as dry as the Sahara.

He does settle down eventually and makes some catchy songs, but he’s definitely playing it safe on this album. There’s nothing new here, these songs will make great radio filler.

Tierra Whack - WORLD WIDE WHACK
65
There’s very few surprises on WORLD WIDE WHACK.

Tierra Whack rarely steps out of the Alt R&B/Pop Rap sound she established on Whack World. I would’ve preferred more of an evolution in her style. She starts to try some new stuff in the middle of the album and those are the strongest songs on here.

New Order - Movement
80
The biggest complaint I've seen about this album is that it sounds too similar to Joy Divison. Uhhhh yeah of course it does. What do you expect from the band of former Joy Division members?

I don't think Movement deserves its reputation as a "rough start" for New Order. It sounds more like a phoenix from the ashes album to me.

Yung Lean - Psykos
78
I'm starting to think any genre can be drained if you put your mind to it.
Ariana Grande - eternal sunshine
83
You can tell Ariana had some vocal training for the Wicked movie cause she is enunciating the fuck out of these lyrics.

I spent my first listen to this album trying to connect each lyric to Ariana and her relationships and ended up quite confused. It made more sense to do this when listening to her previous albums like Thank U, Next where all the lyrics are clearly personal. However, on Eternal Sunshine, it becomes clear that Ariana isn’t pulling from personal experiences on every song ... read more

Kim Gordon - The Collective

Never in a million years did I think a 70 year old white woman's trap album would go so hard.
Don Toliver - Love Sick
49
I don’t get it. Don seems talented and has a unique voice, the beats bring a great vibe and energy to the album, yet I still find it boring.

It’s not boring to the point of wanting to turn it off, just to the point that I never want to go back to it.

MIKE & Tony Seltzer - Pinball
76
Keep feeding this man 808s!
Atari Teenage Riot - Is This Hyperreal?
37
“How much bullets will it take?”

Atari Teenage Riot’s comeback record sounds like a shitty parody of what they once were.

The lyrics are attempting to provoke some reaction, asking the listener to “rise up” and “seek the truth”. But the lyrics are so generalised and vague that I don’t know where they want me to direct my anger towards.

For example the track “Re-arrange Your Synapses” consists of the three of them catastrophising ... read more

Ramona Lisa - Arcadia

An interesting side project with pretty good production. The vocals aren't quite up to the same quality you hear on other Caroline Polacheck projects. They're a bit messy but they convey the ideas well enough. I would be interested to hear the Caroline of today do this.
Grande Mahogany - As Grande As
78
Psychedelic funk rock with the structure of hip hop. This combination leads to many groovy moments especially when it comes to the drums breaks.

However, the looping structure on a lot of songs leaves less to grab onto and fewer catchy moments than your standard funk rock record. Still great music to bop your head to.

ScHoolboy Q - BLUE LIPS
74
This album is pretty weird in a good way. Some really odd song structures and best switches which are great and keep things interesting.

There are some moments where the song structures stop being interesting and start being messy and distracting. But it’s a fine line to walk and Q does it well for the most part.

Yard Act - Where's My Utopia?
80
Such a huge improvement from their debut. These dancier instrumentals provide more substance for the spoken word vocals to sit over.
Friko - Where we've been, Where we go from here
78
The definition of an Indie Darling.

I like this album quite a bit but I can’t shake the feeling that Friko has tricked me into liking it. Of course I like it, it sounds like every good indie album of the last 20 years.

As a fan of 2000s Indie music, of course an album that sounds like Conor Oberst doing Arcade Fire covers will sound good to me. Feels a bit like it was crafted in a lab for indieheads to enjoy.

The band does lean a little too much on this nostalgic sound. All ... read more

Allie X - Girl With No Face
82
An awesome throwback to an 80’s sound that rarely gets revisited.

I’ve been a distant fan of Allie X, liking a few songs here and there, but this album is a huge step up. This is a fantastic dark synth pop record and it’s even more impressive that it’s self-produced.

Kid Cudi - INSANO (NITRO MEGA)
59
Way higher highs than the original Insano but way lower lows as well. Some of the best songs on here are older Kid Cudi tracks which says a lot about the drop in quality of his newer material.
MGMT - Loss of Life
73
I guess I’ll have to give this more listens cause this definitely feels like a grower. I like it but not as much as their previous work.

It’s a more laid back album and doesn’t have any clear stand out tracks like Little Dark Age or Oracular Spectacular and it sounds similar to their self titled which I’m not a huge fan of.

Chairlift - Something
82
Considering how much of a fan I am of Caroline Polachek's solo work and albums that Patrick Wimberly has worked on I don't know why it took me so long to listen to their work together as Chairlift. Caroline's vocal delivery seems a little less virtuoso on here, but she pairs well with Patrick's production.
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine

I had no idea Trent Reznor was such a big Depeche Mode fan.

"@syndiate There's a difference between the low-fidelity recording of Guided by Voices and James Ferraro's bitcrushed music. Guided By Voices was recorded using low-quality equipment, resulting in their raw noisy style. What James is doing here is producing a song, and then exporting the final product with a terrible bitrate. Ferraro sometimes used both tape lo-fi and bitcrushing but they're two very different effects. Ferraro definitely influenced a lot of the hypnagogic vaporware and HexD music we've been hearing over the last two decades."
