FINALLY. While in my hiatus, I was keeping a close eye on WLR. I mean, to be fair this was my most anticipated all year. I heard the leaks, I knew it could be special. The “Over” snippet & the “talk my wife into a THREEwayyyy” clip had me horny for new carti. I browsed r/playboicarti & hawked hip hop news every thursday night. could this be the night we finally get it?
eventually christmas rolled around and i finally listened.
i won’t lie I was a little disappointed. i mean there were 10 great tracks that i loved off rip. but it took some time for the rest to grow. twitter was pissed that night. everyone listened to the first 7 tracks and formed their opinions.
about a week later I came to a realization: Whole Lotta Red is the most based album in a while. Carti does not GIVE A FUCK for most of this. that sort of energy is a welcome change from the dababys, uzis & gunnas who have easily marketable tracks.
there is plenty of variety. there are plenty of quotable and memorable moments. and of course there are bad songs, but the odds of that are super high for a 24 track LP. Go2DaMoon is disappointing. JumpOutTheHouse is unlistenable for me. No Sl33p is ehhh.
But EVERYTHING ELSE is worth listening to.
Even though this album was instantly panned by nearly everyone, I think it’s one people are gonna look back on and realize how significant it is.
