Oceanic-air - THE GRAND FINALE
74

I’m genuinely extremely impressed with this. The production is really great throughout. I love the dreamy guitars on tracks like Voice Of Reason and I Don’t Open Doors Anymore. They’re gorgeous and the way they are mixed with these super raw drums on other songs like I C E MAcHiNe is so nice on my ears. THE GRAND FINALE is an amazing closer too. The guitars do a great job at filling out the mix, I just love how perfectly noisy they are.

Overall this was really good, ... read more

The Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die
97

This is single handedly gonna put me back in my 90s rap phase. I seriously can’t believe it took me this long to get to this album. Biggie is obviously a name that’s been on my radar for a while, but there’s not that much discourse around him that made me want to check this out any sooner. I definitely regret that now though. I mean what an album. B.I.G. has some of the smoothest flows I’ve heard in a while. He fits perfectly on all of these beats and does not stop for ... read more

Oceanic-air - !¡!Free_Samplez!¡! @COSTCO

I love the concept of this album. The interviews were really interesting and, combined with the backing instrumentals, they never made me disengage with the project. This was a unique experience for me as I don’t know if I’ve heard something exactly like this. Definitely worth a listen, I think most people would get something out of this.

MIKE & Tony Seltzer - Pinball
77

This reminded me quite a bit of VOIR DIRE by Earl and The Alchemist from last year, a record that MIKE was actually featured on. They’re both short, rapper-producer albums with 1-2 verse songs and a small chorus every now and then. I’m not in love with this style as I feel it usually leaves very little to cling on to. Even if that feeling is here a bit, I think the production and flows on this album do give some things to grab onto. Songs like Too Good or On God have some really ... read more

Travis Scott - Days Before Rodeo
79

It's crazy that this came just a year before Rodeo. I mean it's not bad or anything, it's just that Rodeo is this insanely polished masterpiece, whereas this is pretty rough. I do think the lofi elements can work to the tape’s benefit at times, but there are moments where it completely does not. That being said, there are some really pretty soundscapes on here. Drugs You Should Try It is a great example with those gorgeous guitars and super spacious production. While Travis has done it ... read more

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
95

I didn’t know what to expect going into this, so I was pleasantly surprised by Amy’s sound. This album has such a jazzy feel. It was pretty much non-stop, with every song leading into each other perfectly and there not being a full on slow down moment. Amy’s voice is so gorgeous and the way she sings fits great on all these instrumentals. I love how grand the title track feels. It’s definitely one of my favorite moments here with such an amazing performance from Amy. I ... read more

SOPHIE - PRODUCT
83

This was a really great collection of singles. It
doesn’t touch what SOPHIE was doing on her next project, but I enjoyed it while it lasted. There are so many punchy bangers on here that were super fun. I see what she was going for with L.O.V.E. but it was a bit hard to listen to. I heavily doubt I’ll be listening to it again on relistens of this.

I wish this was longer as, at only 26 minutes, there’s not quite enough to cling onto for me. Despite that though the songs ... read more

Future - WE STILL DON'T TRUST YOU
81

Metro and Future really stepped up their game with this one. I mean wow I did not expect this to be nearly as good as it is, especially after seeing the hour and 30 minute runtime. And yeah I’m not going to say it isn’t bloated but I expected there to be more filler than there is. The first disc had a lot more R&B influenced trap than the second. Songs like Nights Like This, All to Myself, and Mile High Memories have a great mix of those elements, and are some of my favorite ... read more

Carly Rae Jepsen - E•MO•TION
95

Call Me Maybe was my favorite song for years so this was a bit of a full circle moment for me. The sounds this album taps into are super familiar to me because this kind of stuff is basically what I grew up on. I’m surprised this wasn’t bigger when it came out because all of these songs could be huge hits. The feel good melodies on tracks like Gimmie Love and I Really Like You are so nostalgic. Amazing pop production all throughout, the vocal layers on this are so good. I love the ... read more

Grimes - Art Angels
88

Grimes is a name I’ve heard quite a bit, but it’s rarely for her music. I knew next to nothing about her a year or two ago. Up until listening to this I had heard one song a while back (like I couldn’t tell you what it sounded like now) and a feature on the newest Caroline Polachek album, which I loved. This shocked me at how much I enjoyed it though. The artsy pop and EDM genre mixing works super well together on this album. I really like Grimes’ production styles all ... read more

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
98

This left me speechless the first listen, I listened to it again immediately after and I still have no words. The emotions Mangum expresses on this album are so raw. He allows his voice to go to the point of basically just yelling and it makes for some of the most gorgeous moments on this whole thing. I almost compare it to Twin Fantasy (Mirror to Mirror). It’s not polished at all, and truthfully, it's not produced/mixed that great at points. But it does this on purpose and it works in ... read more

quannnic - kenopsia
85

Going into this I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had heard about quannnic but I didn’t really know much about them. Wow though this album was great. It uses the perfect amount of noise to create these gorgeous atmospheres. Under that noise there were a lot of electronic elements that remind of some moments on frailty. Which makes sense because I think quannnic is in that camp of shoegazy, hyperpop type stuff that people like Jane Remover are also in. I love how quannnic uses their ... read more

RiTchie - Triple Digits [112]
78

This is by far the most creative and most bizarre album I’ve heard this year. It uses aspects of experimental hip hop, but really does whatever it wants. For example, the track Get A Fade with these weird layered vocals with crazy amounts of vocoder on them, backed with what sounds like super light organ notes. Or The Thing which might be my favorite song here. There’s so much going on with the vocals over this already messy beat and the interlude is such an interesting choice, I ... read more

BROCKHAMPTON - PUPPY (2018)
90

It’s coming up on a year since I first discovered BROCKHAMPTON. This band means so much to me, and what a gift to have this come just before that anniversary. I couldn’t stop smiling listening to this so I could only imagine how people who’ve been waiting 6 years feel. It’s so nice to be able to hear new SATURATION/iridescence era songs. And honestly, this album feels like a mix of the two. Before talking about the new material though, I want to talk about the early ... read more

J. Cole - Might Delete Later
59

Now before I even start this review I just want to say, I’ve never been a big J. Cole fan. I don’t like to use the word “overrated” as it implies objectivity, but I’ve never seen the appeal of him. That isn’t to say he’s bad by any means, in my opinion he’s just not as amazing as people prop him up to be. This tape doesn’t change that opinion at all. I am glad to see that not as many people are raving about this project though. This is ... read more

LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
96

I had high expectations going into this and wow did it live up to them. The production on this album is immaculate. Every song builds to these crazy moments with so much going on, but it somehow never feels like too much. Each sound and instrument comes in so seamlessly that you don’t even recognize them half the time, and before you know it you’re at the climax of the song. Despite having an average song length of like 7 minutes, none of these tracks feel that long. They honestly ... read more

21 Savage - american dream
73

Surprisingly this was my first 21 solo album. Obviously I’ve heard plenty of his features though. I mean it seems like he’s been on every mainstream rap album since 2018. I usually like his features, I don’t think he’s the greatest rapper of all time, but he brings enjoyable flows and bars. Honestly though I feel like he puts out his best songs when working with other artists. That’s not to say he can’t be good solo, there are great solo moments on this ... read more

Daniel Caesar - Pilgrim's Paradise
87

I’m not quite sure what it is, but there’s a rougher quality to this project compared to his other works. That’s not a bad thing though it just gives a different vibe from them. It actually helps out on a track like Show No Regret. Speaking of that track, I love that switch up towards the end where it goes into like a full on rock song. Streetcar completely surprised me, I did not expect to hear a Ye cover on this. I enjoyed the shit out of it though. Caesar's gorgeous vocals ... read more

Adrianne Lenker - Bright Future
92

Fuck. What a beautiful album. It had me hooked from the start, that piano was gorgeous and Adrianne’s writing put me straight into the song. The record as a whole is so intimate. It makes me want to curl up into a ball and cry my eyes out. The emotion expressed through these songs is like no other. They’re so raw and the homemade feel of a lot of this really helps to bring that out. There’s this white noise present in most, if not every track on here that adds to that even ... read more
