If anyone’s been following Foals’ music throughout the last few year, hearing them make this transformation to alt dance and pop funk of their latest album Life Is Yours shouldn’t come at any surprise. Their notoriety has certainly been growing around the world and i’m sure with that comes nudges from record labels big wigs to sound more pop and the 80’s happens to be our current pop landscape, so it’s no surprise that songs like “Wake Up”, “2am” and “2001” have them sounding so much like INXS and others include a lot more synths and mallet percussion. With this more accessible sound comes the lose of the meatier instrumental and that is rather unfortunate, but at least tracks like “Flutter” and closer “Wild Green” do add lusher sonic textures. They don’t always look back into the past for inspiration, as the guitar lines on “The Sound” are a dead ringer for things Tycho has been doing this whole time. Life Is Yours is far from being a great Foals album (you can find plenty of those in their discography), but I guess they are continuing to evolve as a band, even if it does takes them into a far more unimpressive place.
