Prize marks the fifth studio album for English singer-songwriter Rozi Plain and my first exposure to her music and I will say that although it didn’t provide something truly original, it has the potential to work it’s way into your heart. Album opener “Agreeing For Two” sets a nice tone with it’s sugary sweet synths working along the faint horns of guest Alabaster DePlume, the harmonies and light bounce of “Complicated” makes it sound more like a Big Thief track, “Prove Your Good” has an interesting way of making it way to the chorus, “Spot Thirteen” brings back those DePlume horns for some soothing tranquilly and “Painted the Room” made me nostalgic for late 2000’s indie in the best way possible. On Prize, Rozi Plain provides intriguing arrangements that utilize comforting tempos and sonic tinkering, synth tones that bring back old memories and lyrics that are both cryptic, yet still say just enough to connect and for all those reasons, I felt it amounted to be an album worth spending time with.
