PERFECT ALBUM #1:

"Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis (1959) {Jazz}

The first ever 'supergroup' masterpiece: "Kind of Blue". When Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb entered Columbia’s 30th St. studio March 2, 1959, they had little idea that the music they were about to create would stand as a hallowed monument in the history of jazz - music that would become as revered as the recordings of Louis Armstrong and the Hot Five, or Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie on Savoy and Dial. Miles Davis’ smoky 1959 album, "Kind of Blue", remains part of the essential American cultural fabric and, like the grayness of smoke itself, mixes a palette of obsidian African resonances and rhythms with the whiteness of a European art-music tradition.

At the time it was made, "Kind of Blue" was a revolution all its own, a radical break from everything going on. Turning his back on standard blues chord progressions, trumpeter Miles Davis used modal scales as a starting point for composition and improvisation - thus experimenting & breaking new ground with warmth, subtlety and understatement in the thick of hard bop. Davis and his all-star team used an approach which allowed them a cool, new, collected freedom. Miles conceived these settings only hours before the recording dates and arrived with sketches which indicated to the group what was to be played. Therefore, you will hear something close to pure spontaneity in these performances. And it's free flowing genius from deep within that paint the picture of the end of the 50's, an LP that still stands as a benchmark in musical achievement, as well as human history.
