This'll always be my first eye-opening exposure to experimental rock.
I absolutely adore true abstract music; needless to say, this is one of the best examples of that ever!
I love the energy! Maybe I'm more used to DIY punk than most, oh well, rock on!
How dare they! A well-established band that focuses more on raw energy than on constantly trying too hard to prolong mainstream success 30+ years after their debut. You don't have to like it ofc, but at least respect the energy this has in a lengthy career.
The stories behind these albums will be revealed...eventually, when I can focus on it...
Korn being with this kind of very polished production is different for sure, but I think they do a pretty good job with it. Untouchables has an all-encompassing feel that I can see some people viewing as being too album-focused, with not enough uniqueness within each song. What can I say? I'm kind of a sucker for that kind of experience. I will admit that this is better because it's kind of a one-off. I do agree that "Here To Stay" is the most standout track, though. But I ... read more
This is the first album I heard from the gothic, country-rock legends. I am still surprised that it's not one of their most popular releases, though there is a lot of competition within their discography. The production is beautifully dark and well-polished. The songwriting resonates with me, especially "Get Up." The line "you're living alone, an army of one. Got nothin' to do, 'cause you already won" gives me chills because I relate to it so much, lol...
Music with a sophisticated and professional image? No thanks! I'm listening to Viagra Boys! Don't bother me!
A legendary debut from a band that later leaned more into pop music. This has its pop moments, don't get me wrong, but it's mixed in with some of the best jams from the time (which is really saying something). Free Form Guitar might go on for a bit too long, but everything else is really consistently great. From the aptly titled "Introduction" alone, you can immediately tell that this band is offering a unique talent. It's classic in every sense of the word. If you like ... read more
The opposite of Diver Down, their album of mainly covers that they did after this one didn't do as well as their previous efforts. It's a shame because this is a darker Van Halen album with no covers and an overall heavier theme, which is why I like it so much. It's weirdly self-aware of rock culture at the time, especially with David Lee Roth singing, lol. This is also one of their "grooviest" albums (for lack of a less outdated term). I have a lot of hot takes about ... read more
Their rawest recording process resulted in some of their most powerful songs, along with some that are simply a fun time. It's a weird mix of songs but I like it.
A great story with a good self-aware follow-up message for those who stand by Downward Spiral and The Fragile. "Only" is one of the best parts where he admits, soberly, "there is no you, there is only me," after saying "you were never really real, to begin with. I just made you up to hurt myself."
