AOTY 2022
There’s a really good 15-track album inside SOS, but the overwhelming amount of so-so tracks really compromises its pacing and makes it harder to digest. Regardless, the hitters do somehwhat compensate for the skips, and there’s quite a handful of them. On Gone Girl, perhaps the most vulnerable track on the record, SZA opens up about wanting to let go of things that take up her space and peace of mind — “Memories drown me the further I go/I tried to erase, I live to ... read more
Charlie Puth - CHARLIE
10/10. I wish my jacket smelled like you, Charlie.
I knew she had it in her but I didn't think she was gonna come THIS hard so soon after her disappointing last project. WILLOW's new album is an electrifying piece of pop-punk, full of personality and with incredible delivery. First of all, she sounds amazing. I find it really interesting that she found a way to explore every single part of her voice here, always playing to her strengths and never letting the confidence behind. Sometimes her performace comes off more aggressive, like on the ... read more
The Beths - Expert In A Dying Field
Quite possibly my favorite indie rock album of the year. I'm not familiar with this band at all but this was such a fun listen, I really don't have much to complain. The production, although probably what you would expect from this type of record, is punchy and energetic, vocal performances are great and the songs are super catchy. The songwriting is a bit of a mixed bag, sometimes generic, but there are a few really great lines and metaphors hidden here and there. The title track for example ... read more
Ari Lennox - age/sex/location
I don’t know what you guys are talking about but this record is GREAT and a huge improvement from Shea Butter Baby imo. That one was enjoyable too but it had a lot of ups and downs, while this is extremely consistent from top to bottom. The production is nearly flawless throughout the entire album. It’s sensual and groovy but also delicate and pleasant enough to let Ari's undeniable voice shine. The instruments are really well mixed and I love how the bass is very upfront, ... read more
I mean… at least they stopped doing those obnoxious EDM drops but this is so unbelievably mid in comparison to other k-pop releases we got this year, especially considering they’re the biggest girl group in the world lol.

FAV TRACKS: Pink Venom, Hard to Love
WORST: Typa Girl

Rina Sawayama - Hold The Girl
With her 2017 self-titled EP, Rina Sawayama revealed herself as a breath of fresh air for pop music. When overproduced EDM was making waves in the mainstream, her cybernetic revitalization of 90s and early 2000s aesthetics combined with a strong sense of relatability and timeless production felt like a monumental moment for poptimists. Amidst a pandemic, she released her first full length LP SAWAYAMA, which pretty much followed the steps of its predecessor, adding hookier tunes and more varied ... read more
Sudan Archives - Natural Brown Prom Queen
Sudan Archives' sophomore LP is a stunning collection of alternative R&B tracks that cement her as a force within the genre. Although long, the record is fun from beginning to end and sees the musician wearing multiple influences, which makes for a very engaging listen. Sudan is an artist who's always seemed well aware of what it takes to make a complete body of work, as you can see from her debut Athena, a very focused concept album, but I think this time she took a risk by making ... read more
FLO - The Lead
These girls need to be the next big thing in pop. They're seriously super talented and I think bringing back the girl group format that got popularized by acts such as Destiny's Child and TLC in the late 90s isn't a bad idea after all, especially if the music is this good. The Lead might be a short EP, but it's a pretty good introduction to the trio. Not only does it feel like an homage to the groups I previously mentioned, I'd say it's a revitalization of that sound, and, in that aspect, it's ... read more
Perfume Genius - Ugly Season
From someone who's not too big on Perfume Genius, this album is fantastic. I went into it not knowing what to expect and left completely blown away by how enchanting and captivating it all sounds. Don't let the title trick you, Ugly Season is an absolutely stunning project that blends multiple influences to invoke feelings and create unique atmospheres, going from classical arrangements to avant-garde dance and art pop. Each song has its own world but they all come together in a very cohesive ... read more
Yaya Bey - Remember Your North Star
Remember Your North Star is a pleasant R&B record to keep in the background while you’re doing something else but that too often fails to leave a strong impression. And I think that's partially due to the large amount of interludes that wanna be full songs but don’t have enough substance to be memorable in any way. It’s the first time I’m listening to Yaya Bey and I think she has a wonderful voice and is pretty talented (considering majority of this album is self ... read more
Ravyn Lenae - Hypnos
Whoa… she’s absolutely insane for this. Already on her debut album, Ravyn Lenae proves that she’s one of the best artists modern R&B has to offer. HYPNOS has this strong 90s aura that reminds me a lot of Brandy's work (more specifically Never Say Never), but with a modern twist given by its lo-fi and neo-soul aesthetics. The production is very dreamy and often times psychedelic, blending beautifully with Ravyn's impressively tight and captivating harmonies and runs. ... read more
Rachel Chinouriri - Better Off Without
Better Off Without is easily my favorite EP of the year so far. The bedroom/indie pop sound works very well here, the production is super crisp and lively (absolutely love the drums), and the songwriting is great. Kinda sounds like what Harry's House was trying to do lol. Also, Rachel sounds sooooo good on top of these instrumentals, she has an amazing voice. I just wish this was longer honestly. Hopefully we get a full album next.

WORST: N/A ... read more

Harry Styles - Harry's House
One thing I think we can all agree about Harry Styles is that he's the most complete artist that left 1D. Like him or not, the guy is talented. He's a good singer, knows how to put on a show, and, as seen on his past two albums, has a good ear for music. His self-titled debut record, although derivative, saw him embracing his influences to create a nostalgic and surprisingly mature set of tracks that were cleanly produced and served as proof of his potential while also showcasing a side of him ... read more
Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers
Edit: I’m changing this to an 8/10 because for me personally this doesn’t quite reach the levels of GKMC and in terms of enjoyability it is much closer to DAMN. in my opinion. Still, I love the record and my overall thoughts on it pretty much remain the same.

This man said be afraid and I started peeing my pants.
Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers isn’t what I was expecting from Kendrick Lamar. First time I listened to it I left deeply confused and underwhelmed by the ... read more

Ethel Cain - Preacher's Daughter
Honestly I get what it’s going for and I think it is a very well rounded body of work but it doesn’t do much for me. I really enjoyed “American Teenager” and probably would’ve liked the album more if it sounded more like that but the really slow and lengthy cuts just bored me to death, and Ethel's vocal delivery isn’t that special or interesting either, even though her songwriting ability is great. I think doing the slowcore, reverb heavy thing is fine for ... read more
Hatchie - Giving The World Away
Not doing a full on review for this one, but it’s absolutely great! Dazzling dream-pop with a very nostalgic 90s touch. The production is very ethereal with hints of shoegaze and dance pop, and Hatchie clearly has an amazing ear for melody, there are plenty of catchy tunes in here. I’d say the only thing that holds it back from being truly amazing is the fact that it’s not super original and the more lowkey moments didn’t do much for me, but the overall atmosphere that ... read more
Pusha T - It's Almost Dry
𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐀𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐃𝐫𝐲: 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐛𝐲 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬

My first real contact with Pusha T's music was with Daytona, a concise but very unique project that really blew me away on the first couple of listens. I was surprised to hear how consistently great that album was, with banger after banger, bar after bar, and lots of ... read more

Anitta - Versions of Me

For those who may not know, Anitta is a brazilian singer that gained massive success in the country during the 2010s. After getting her first major hit in 2013, she quickly quite literally became the biggest popstar Brazil has ... read more

Camila Cabello - Familia
𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚: 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭, 𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

When Camila Cabello announced Familia, her third album, she described it as a return to her latin roots, a project that would explore rhythms and stories from her heritage, hence the title which translates to “family”. I personally am not a fan of hers or her music, but the premise of this record got me interested, so I checked it out. But I gotta say ... read more
