Violet - If Anything At All
90

To anyone out there reading this after Violet have already taken over the world; HAHAHAHA, I WAS HERE FIRST!

No but seriously this EP is so strong. Harry Jones has one of the best voices I've ever heard period, it's mad how good he is on top of his seriously impressive guitar chops. Combine that with Jim and Wanda making up one of the most solid rhythm sections out there, and this becomes a band to WATCH. I can't believe how much I like all these songs when Amadeus, objectively ... read more

Adrianne Lenker - songs
100

I'm convinced Adrienne Lenker is a transcendent being. I don't see any explanation for how her songwriting can touch the deepest depths of my soul that allows her to be any less than a wise spirit. These songs sound great, both production wise and music wise (some of those guitar parts are fucking crazy!!!)

Beautiful. Just... ow.

twenty one pilots - The Contract
95

I'm such a TOP hater, but I still think this is really fucking cool. The hyperpop kinda sound on this is fucking crazy good

Black Country, New Road - Forever Howlong
85

Absolutely joyous from front to back. I was a little hesitant when the band lost Isaac initially; none of the songs from Live At Bush Hall really grabbed me, and that album came and went for me, leaving me anxious to see if the band could find their footing again. Thankfully, when Besties came along, all fears I had disappeared. Having spent some time with this record, I really like it! It's not as connected to me as Ants From Up There is, but that's moreso perhaps because I am a ... read more

glass beach - the first glass beach album
100

I think I'll need to come back to this one later to give it my full thoughts. It's really hard for me to not give this a 100; this album is very important to me. I'm currently in one of my roughest periods mentally, and this record is soothing that pain.

This album is really beautiful and really well put together.

As an aspiring musician in a small band, this is what I dream of. To make something this cool, this meaningful. It's just so inspiring.

EDIT: NR > 100

Pink Floyd - The Wall
70

I really struggled to understand The Wall. On paper, it seems like an album I'd love; concept, story driven, rock, but I just can't get with it. It's good, don't get me wrong. But Pink Floyd has always had better albums, and the near total control Waters had over this album really narrows its artistic scope.

Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
100

The unfortunate departure of Isaac Wood from BCNR really does tinge his songwriting on this album with a lot of new meaning. I can definitely understand the negative impact performing these songs would have had on his mental health, and for his sake I hope he's recovering. This album is both beautiful and brutal to experience. The musicianship from the band is incredible for a group so young, crafting these beautiful melodies to accompany Isaac's frankly distressing vocal ... read more

Charli xcx - BRAT
100

I only really got into pop in any form very recently, once I started to discover artists making really fun, non-commercial material within the genre and style. That being true, I'd never heard Charli before BRAT. This album is an amazing collection of club bangers, like 360 or 365, Club classics, or Von dutch, tinged with that extra layer of sentimentality and emotional depth on tracks like So I, Everything is romantic or I might say something stupid. This album really is pretty ... read more

Hozier - Hozier
80

Hozier's debut is still one of the strongest starts for an artist that I have ever, ever seen. Obviously he attracted attention from the mainstream public with "Take Me To Church", but that song is far surpassed in quality by many others on this record. The lyrical ability on display is utterly staggering, Hozier's voice is breathtakingly soulful, the guitar riffs across the record were classic on arrival, and the emotional potence of these tracks can't be overstated. ... read more

Jacob Collier - Djesse (Vol. 1)
30

This is what happens when you give That Kid at music school too much money and attention. That goes for the rest of these albums. This album has one good song, which is With The Love In My Heart, and one decent cover, which is All Night Long. Other than those, I never, ever want to hear another track off this thing. Only slightly better than Vol 4.

Jacob Collier - Djesse (Vol. 2)
45

Vol 2 of the Djesse quadrology sees Collier take a step into folk and singer songwriter type music, abandoning the bombastic orchestra for soft guitars. This album definitely came and went for me. I really do struggle to remember any of the songs. Sky Above is a highlight in my book, showing both the power of Collier's off-the-wall ideas as well as how good restraint is for making his wild ideas listenable. Make Me Cry is a soft ballad, with probably the best lyrics Collier has penned in ... read more

Jacob Collier - Djesse (Vol. 3)
65

Far and away the best of the Djesse quadrology, Vol 3 features some of my favourite Collier songs, as he splashes for the first time into the deep pool that is pop music (before turning it into a violent whirlpool with his next album). Tracks like In My Bones, Time Along With You and All I Need more than make up for the failed experiments here, like Count The People, an insufferable lyrical spiritual miracle rap song, the bizarre Light It Up On Me, or the irritating opener Clarity. It's ... read more

Jacob Collier - Djesse (Vol. 4)

Before I begin, I have to say; I really do like Jacob. As a musician I can see and respect the sheer talent he has at music. He's a consummate performer, an unbelievable talent, a true visionary pushing boundaries. I have seen him live and it was a great show! He really knows how to work a crowd, the audience choir was great to be part of, and I enjoyed the songs he played there. I have also enjoyed previous works of his, songs like All I Need, Time Alone With You, With The Love In My ... read more

clipping. - Visions of Bodies Being Burned
90

Alongside its sister album There Existed An Addiction To Blood, I listen to this album every October to get in the seasonal spirit. Visions Of Bodies Being Burned might be even better than it's predecessor, but honestly these albums are such a package deal for me I can't put one over the other. This album features some of the most catchy tracks clipping. has to offer, from Cam & China's refrains on '96 Neve Campbell and my favourite track, Check The Lock, to moments of ... read more

clipping. - There Existed an Addiction to Blood
90

Alongside its sister album Visions of Bodies Being Burned, I listen to this album every October to get in the seasonal spirit. From the Intro, Daveed Diggs paints vivid pictures of blood, violence and death, putting you in the victim's chair at every turn. Meanwhile, from Carpenter-inspired Nothing Is Safe, to the moments of harsh noise present on tracks like La Mala Ordina, to the frankly unbelievable sound design on Run For Your Life, Jonathan Snipes and William Hutson are flexing some ... read more

Wings - Band on the Run
85

Definitely the highlight of Paul's post-Beatles career, this album really does show him getting that magic again. From the title track, which feels stylistically in line with something like the Abbey Road medley or A Day In The Life, to catchy pop tracks like Jet or Let Me Roll It which feel like they were designed to be sang along to in a stadium, Paul McCartney finally makes something so good that not even a chronically cynical John Lennon could deny its brilliance.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
100

For some bands, following a record like Dark Side would be a tough job. Not for Pink Floyd, apparently. Dark Side deserves every 10 it gets, but so does this. There's no record more utterly otherworldly. The fact that David Gilmour can capture my complete, undivided attention by playing 4 notes is enough to give this the perfect score.

Sampha - Lahai
90

Sampha has one of the best voices in music right now. His melodies, his vocal inflections, his accent, his technical chops, all of it gives him a superpower that instantly elevates any song he's on to stellar levels. Luckily, that's not the only thing Lahai has going for it. Alongside Sampha's voice are his songwriting skills, creating catchy, singable bangers across the project, the production, which is so deep and inventive it genuinely lifts the record into masterdom. On a ... read more

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
75

Definitely the Arctic Monkeys' best in my opinion. Lots and lots of catchy, classic indie rock here. There's no better album to show someone to make them want to learn an instrument and play this stuff.

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
100

The story behind Rumours, the cheating, the breakups, the fighting, the drugs; all of it has entered mythos in rock history. However, what all that pain and hardship the band endured created was a timeless, classic album chock full of hit after hit after hit. You could have taken almost any song from this album and issued it as a single. That is some next level pop songwriting.
