Very enjoyable, extremely replayable

Despite being a compilation of covers, Nightcord at 25's Sekai Album vol.1 works surprisingly well as an actual project. Although some tracks might not feel even remotely similar to eachother, this is an album that flows very well. The tracks complement eachother in a great way. Despite having very serious downs, the ups of this album are really enjoyable, and feature very impressive vocal performances.

MAVI - shadowbox
95

shadowbox is such a raw, heartfelt album that mavi has gifted to the world. whether it's the production, the delivery and rapping, the themes, the lyricism - everything is presented as well as they can be. there are so many highlights to point out here: the insane rhyme schemes on 'the sky is quiet', the poetic lyrics on songs like 'open waters', 'the giver' and 'testimony', the amazing and consistent quality of the beats...

Travis Scott - DAYS BEFORE RODEO [Reissue]
75

if there's something travis has always been great at, it's definitely setting up the right atmosphere for a project. this mixtape makes you feel like you're in another universe. great world building. this is a pretty solid assortment of songs, and the highlights show how much talent travis had to offer in his early days

favorite / best track - drugs you should try it
least favorite / worst track - basement freestyle

Vince Staples - Dark Times
95

music that feels like reading through a diary.

dark times really is an emotional rollercoaster - sometimes gloomy, sometimes beautiful, but it all builds up to present a very mature and touching album that will stay on your mind.

the calm and jazzy vibe of the instrumentals used throughout the album create the perfect atmosphere needed for the content of the album as vince dives into topics such as self contemplation, the struggles he's experienced in the environment he grew up in, his ... read more

Dominic Fike - 14 minutes
45

meh.

dominic fike has one or two interesting ideas in this short ep, but it ultimately doesn't have much substance or uniqueness to it. the tracks don't have much that differentiate them, the vocal effects are pretty annoying. i did not expect it to be this stale, considering how much personality many of dominic's songs have. really disappointing.

best track - coast2coast

Acidgvrl - YOU STUPID PINK GIRL !
5

tried to give it a second chance to see if people were being too harsh. and on my second listen, i still felt mentally ill after finishing the album.

i really dislike being negative in my reviews since i respect every artist for trying to express themselves and show their creativity to the world. that's why i will try to be as nice as possible with my comments.

i am pretty unfamiliar with this artist but when i saw the impressive 8/100 rating, i knew i had to give "YOU STUPID PINK ... read more

Loyle Carner - Yesterday's Gone
80

the definition of "rhythm and poetry"

yesterday's gone is an album that i discovered about 2 years ago, and disregarded pretty quickly. but man, that was a mistake. this 40 minute-ish album consists of pure lyricism, beautiful and melodic instrumentals, and is a project very personal to loyle carner. tracks such as 'florence' - where loyle talks about the sister that he never had, but always wanted, really showcase loyle's ability to capture the listeners heart ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers

not necessarily a review, but i want to make a small comment about how much this album means to me.

two year anniversary of me listening mr. morale & the big steppers for the first time, and i can confidently say that it will remain with me for a very long time. this album changed me as a person, changed my perspective on topics such as mental health and self help, and changed me to become a better person overall. it taught me to be myself and accept who i am, taught me that my flaws are ... read more

Earl Sweatshirt & The Alchemist - VOIR DIRE [Streaming Version]

great collaboration between one of my all time favorite hip hop producers and my favorite depressed dreadhead

this is going to be a nothing burger of a review, but i just wanna leave my thoughts here. great lyricism all around, earl really is a poet. the production on this album is insane - i especially love how well the tracks connect with eachother, creating a smoothly flowing project. the beats are top notch and they create a unique, cozy but grimey atmosphere. everything's great and ... read more

Quadeca - SCRAPYARD
90

my favorite project released in the first half of 2024

earlier this year, quadeca released a highly ambitious mixtape, 'SCRAPYARD'. in this multi-genre project, quad tries sounds that he was previously unfamiliar with, and man does he deliver. it's been a few months since the release of this mixtape, but i still find myself constantly revisiting and looping it.

from the highly experimental hip hop tracks to songs like texas blue and guide dog, it's very impressive how the ... read more

JPEGMAFIA - I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU

edit: 85 -> 90. it's dark and hell is got grew on me.

jay 'pegging' mafia descends from the skies to bless the white folk with another banger

just as expected, jpegmafia's new album sounds nothing like the previous ones he's put out. i really love the metal and rock influence present throughout the album, as he executes it greatly - especially on the first track.

words cannot describe how amazing the intro track is to me. it sets up the atmosphere of the project ... read more

Frank Sinatra - The World We Knew

frank sinatra will never fail to amaze me. his music always makes me feel like a drunk man heavily in love. specific, yes.

i never fully delved into any of his albums, up until this point. since the title track, 'the world we knew' has been my favorite from him for a while, i decided to go with this project. and honestly, i can't say it surprised me at all.

this album features exactly what you would expect from him: a lovebird showing off his angelic voice, accompanied by the ... read more

Tame Impala - Currents

an immersive, unforgettable experience

currents is an album that does everything right. amazing world building that throws you into another universe, only accompanied by your own thoughts. bittersweet and hard hitting lyrics about the hardships inside one's love life. the sometimes groovy, sometimes somber instrumentals. the tracks flowing and complementing eachother extremely well. everything about this album just clicks and works together to presents you an experience that will stay ... read more
