2023 in Albums

The albums I've listened (and plan to listen to) in 2023 in release order.

Oedipus Apartment Complex - The Blissful Sounds of Miracula
1.
71
RELEASE: January 1, 2023 | Ambient
Very simple, very quirky, very ambient - lovely stuff. It blends well together which fits the ambient genre perfectly. If you want something to study or read to, this would absolutely be a perfect contender.
Sun Is Poison - God Gave Him a Wolf’s Heart
2.

RELEASE: January 2, 2023 | Folk Rock
What a good lil puppy! Who wants scritches? Yes you do! Yes y- oh sorry. Yeah, the musics solid mate, now leave me and my son alone
Anti-Flag - LIES THEY TELL OUR CHILDREN
3.
40
RELEASE: January 6, 2023 | Pop Punk
For Pop Punk, this is flat. Flatter than our earth hahaugetmelolididafunnyjoke.
RuPaul - Black Butta
4.
46
RELEASE: January 6, 2023 | Dance Pop
RuPaul. Your flair is bangin', but the butta is melted, now sashay away.
Iggy Pop - EVERY LOSER
5.
RELEASE: January 6, 2023
Circa Waves - Never Going Under
6.
85
RELEASE: January 13, 2023 | Indie Rock
Immediate Reytons vibes. "Do You Wanna Talk" is fast paced, catchy and punchy, the trio of yes please. I started off underwhelmed, the title track is notably less of a solid song than the rest of the album. Once track two comes on, there's no dip in strength from then onward. It has everything an Indie Rock record needs to excel, and this has done just that.
♥ FAV SONG: Do You Wanna Talk
Gabrielle Aplin - Phosphorescent
7.
63
RELEASE: January 13, 2023 | Pop
It's a bit of a blurred vision encapsulated with a beautiful voice. Nothing remarkable that I'd listen to again, however.
Rozi Plain - Prize
8.
76
RELEASE: January 13, 2023 | Folk Pop
The first three seconds grabbed me and the vocal has me staying. The backing tracks are just the right amount of art pop and folk that keeps my attention. There's elements of Jazz sprinkled throughout which, as we know from Max Pope's 2022 release is an absolute winner to my ears. Not to mention the stellar production work! The spreading of the instruments creates a placement in a room that every instrument can relax in and take center stage when needs be.
Gaz Coombes - Turn The Car Around
9.
65
RELEASE: January 13, 2023 | Indie Rock
I'd say it's just above bang average. Nothing to ride home about, really.
The Subways - Uncertain Joys
10.
68
RELEASE: January 13, 2023 | Alt Rock
The backing tracks are fun, but where the album lacks is in the impact. It comes across more raw than anything else and the vocals feel a little lackluster. I wished the production was stronger overall for this because as I said, the backing tracks are great. Looking past the production issues, it's a pleasant mixture of garage/indie/alt rock - simple in nature and easy to listen to.
Margo Price - Strays
11.
62
RELEASE: January 13, 2023 | Country Pop
I find myself straying away rather than being drawn in.
Ten56. - Downer, Pt.2
12.
80
RELEASE: January 13, 2023 | Numetalcore
Never did I think I'd feel so fucking energised after listening to complete and utter filth. Nu-metalcore with a deathcore inspiration. The viciously evil guitar/bass combo and vocal growls are sickening to a RICH degree. SHEEEEESH.
♥ FAV SONG: Saiko
ALPHA 9 - New Horizons
13.
81
RELEASE: January 13, 2022 | Trance
Trance executed to a stellar degree. While some tracks get a little too extensive in their buildups, the others, such as "Calling" are absolutely brilliant. ARTY is one of the best Progressive House producers out there and his step into Progressive Trance is welcomed with open arms. Somewhere out there, Armin Van Buuren is leaping around to these bops.
♥ FAV SONG: Calling
Polar - Everywhere, Everything
14.
73
RELEASE: January 13, 2023 | Post Hardcore
There's tons of mosh in this, but the sound of the guitar is repeated throughout every track and can get quite stale. Besides that, it's lovely hardcore fun.
Snavs - Wendy
15.
68
RELEASE: January 13, 2023 | EDM
At first I was extremely underwhelmed with this but then I realised that La Guitarra is on this EP and my face beamed up. Other than that, the hybrid trap is executed with no real flair, leaving the first tracks to be a bit meh overall. Bloom is also decent, but nothing new. I CANNOT get over how good La Guitarra is though, holy shiiiiit. That being here alone boosts it's score to more than it realistically should be.
The Wise Man's Fear - Atlas Ruinica
16.
74
RELEASE: January 13, 2023 | Metalcore
While the chorus' are a pleasant mixture of growl centric & uplifting with a powerful lead vocal, it's the breakdowns that make this band shine. It's nothing overly new or innovative, and the mix on most tracks are a bit flatter than I'd like. If you like ERRA, those are the vibes I get from 90% of the music here. There's some beautiful tracks in here too, such as "The Strength to Bury a Friend" that captures a real inner pain and makes you feel, it's extremely moving. The real winner is the breakdown in "Sea of Fire" that completely rips your sternum out, that alone boosts this albums score, but not by much. It's very good but lackluster in more places than it should be to be great.
Ryuichi Sakamoto - 12
17.
RELEASE: January 17, 2023
We Are Scientists - Lobes
18.
66
RELEASE: January 20, 2023 | Indie Rock/Pop
It's fun Indie Rock meets Indie Pop, that's about it to me. Nothing is done badly by any stretch, if anything it's very listenable, but I wouldn't find myself going back to it over and over again.
The Murder Capital - Gigi's Recovery
19.
84
RELEASE: January 20, 2023 | Post-Punk Revival
This is so incredibly hypnotic, ethereal and mesmerising. While it stays dark in theme, there's something that draws me closer as each song progresses. Post-Punk done right. There's so many winks to other top class bands which leaves a little smile on your face. Gigi's Recovery is so wickedly enthralling and paced incredibly well. Absolutely stunning.
Måneskin - RUSH!
20.

RELEASE: January 20, 2023 | Alt/Pop Rock
"She smiled and told me "You have a massive car", ca-car ca-ca-ca-cock"
I didn't realise that the Black Eyed Peas were their ghost writers.
What in the ever living fuck is the whole of "BLA BLA BLA"? Did you need another song for this album, considering you have SIXTEEN OTHERS?
Maneskin replaced their teenager angst with label-hungry, pretentious guitar loops and boring backing beats that seem dragged and dropped from Splice. After Sam Ryder's absolute shit show from the backend of last year, I was keeping my fingers crossed for these four to be the better people and keep their flair, did they bollocks.
Ladytron - Time's Arrow
21.
58
RELEASE: January 20, 2023 | Synthpop
Female lead Pet Shop Boys. Animal Store Girls.
Genevieve Stokes - Catching Rabbits
22.
RELEASE: January 20, 2023
The Reytons - What's Rock And Roll?
23.
97
RELEASE: January 20, 2023 | Indie Rock
I've been so excited for this record and it's finally dropped. Off the bat, I knew it was classic Reytons, the guitars are thick and the vocal is bang on. A lot of this record connects back to their debut in both sound and structure, which isn't inherently bad, but it does make me wonder if they can switch it up on their 3rd record. This is not meaning to say this is bad, it's bloody great, however if you listen to 'Kids Off The Estate' and this record back to back you'd swear you're listening to a double album. Ultimately it's a nitpicky thing that really doesn't take away from the enjoyment for me as The Reytons is one of my favourites in Indie Rock.
♥ FAV SONG: Cash In Hand & Fake IDs
John Cale - Mercy
24.
70
RELEASE: January 20, 2023 | Art Pop
Many-a-goosebump with this one. Incredibly moving, especially for a man at his age.
Bass Drum of Death - Say I Won't
25.
RELEASE: January 27, 2023
Samia - Honey
26.
RELEASE: January 27, 2023
The Arcs - Electrophonic Chronic
27.
76
RELEASE: January 27, 2023 | Blues Rock
A vast array of Blues, Funk and Soul with the Rock twist to give it some flair, and it's magnificent. A specific shout-out to "Eyez" that immediately caught my attention. It's chill while being bouncy and simple but so much fun at the same time.
Sam Smith - Gloria
28.
RELEASE: January 27, 2023
Alex Melton - Southern Charm
29.
73
RELEASE: January 27, 2023 | Pop Punk/Country Rock
Alex's production skills really have been honed in and sharpened in the years he's been active and this is an extremely strong showing. Starting off with Pop Punk covers of Country songs in the first half and switching the genres in the second makes for an enjoyable listen overall. I was hoping this would be original music, but I can't be mad with covers as this is his niche!
Fucked Up - One Day
30.
65
RELEASE: January 27, 2023 | Post-Hardcore
While it's fun and quirky, it's not really my preference. It comes across more noisy than I was originally expecting, but it's not bad considering that. Also - written and recorded in a single day? Huge props.
Meg Baird - Furling
31.
RELEASE: January 27, 2023
Vistas - The Beautiful Nothing
32.
82
RELEASE: January 27, 2023 | Indie Rock
It's releases like this that make me really regret putting EPs at a hard limit of 80, so fuck it this is getting more. Vistas don't fail at making any Indie Rock be fun to listen to. Combining the circumstances of my first listen through to just how good the music is makes this score break the great barrier. Vistas are a force to be reckoned with in Indie Rock. Top stuff as always!
