Sure thing! Anytime!! I imagine it will, let me know if something goes astray. The first year for all jobs is rough, but I'm sure you're already aware haha. Honestly you're doing your best and I imagine your students are taking notice. In a good way though. You're doing good man, keep it up!

Also did you use a seed potato or a potato from the grocery store? Grocery store potatoes are treated a seed inhibitor so that way they don't sprout in the grocery store. A.k.a. it may not bear fruit

Is it spreading out? If so that's natural for potatoes so no need to fret lol! That's usually the part you want to cover because that's what fruits later on. Also, in most cases, no you do not want to change the soil. It's not a dumb question though! Rather you want to amend the soil. Usually with a wee bit of compost since fertilizers are very specific.

The reason for a cover being that bare sun can turn the potatoes green or even overwhelm the plant. Potatoes are odd... and obody likes a green potato haha! Also make sure the soil is evenly moist or a tad bit dry. If you need to start over no need to fret! This is a pretty good time to start potatoes too. I know this was kinda long winded lol hope this helps and good luck! Let me know if you have any more questions :)

On that potato plant...I'm not sure how you're growing it but I imagine its indoors in a container no? If so I suggest moving it outside during the day. Maybe even a bigger pot too? Make sure the soil drains water well (garden sand and perlite are great additives) and that theres a cover over the top soil. Hay and newspaper are great for that cover and will eventually compost for a little permaculture lol. If you use newspaper make sure you cut an X where you planted the seed potato.
