lately I've been getting into a jazz, a genre I've never been that familiar with. this is one of the albums I've listened to that really makes me fall in love with jazz a little more each time I listen to it. how do I even begin to explain what makes this record so great? it's like everything on this album just FITS. I feel so entranced everytime I listen to it.

great, great, great, engaging production. my score would be way higher if it wasn't for the record taking a bit of a dip towards the end. especially the last song is guilty of being kind of sleepy and forgettable.

listening to this record after having heard WL/WH definitely threw me off at first. it took me multiple listens for me to really love it, but god do I LOVE this record now. the only track on here that really calls back to the experimental music they made previously is The Murder Mystery, other than that the record is generally more down to earth. IMO this album really shines in it's subtleties, i.e. on songs like Jesus and Pale Blue Eyes.

it's fine I guess... I really wanted to love this record but to me it's is just nowhere near as great as their first 3 records. the album kicks off really strong, Sweet Jane and Rock & Roll being some of my favourite VU track, but after Cool It Down the record just takes a dip. there's nothing on here that I would say is truly bad, but a lot of tracks on here that I just don't connect with.

I tried to go into this putting aside any biases I had towards this album and I think I can say safely that it's far from the monstrosity people like to make it out to be. it's just reaally mediocre. there's not much interesting or of intrigue here to find, some tracks on here are catchy enough, but mostly it's just really stale and forgettable.

edit: so, like I mentioned in my original review: Charli was my favourite release from last year. with such high expectations I was pretty much bound to be disappointed in the record at SOME point. however, since first listening to the album it's grown on me a lot.

original score: 80
it's a bit of a mixed bag in the sense that some tracks on here go absolutely HARD, while others just leave me feeling kind of... disappointed. and I have no doubt that that has everything to do with my ... read more

let me just say right away that guilty conscience is anthemic to the core. although apart from the first 5 tracks the album is pretty lackluster to me.

all I'm saying is that if 2020 is gonna be the year of pop/nu-metal crossovers, I'm not complaining

unfortunately even the great, engaging production can't save much of these tracks from being, well, pretty forgettable. mixed feelings towards this record.
