[Rock Coliseum Favourites: Jon's 2012 AOTY]

Ah, 2012. The year where Fantano gave his first 10/10, everyone thought the world was going to end and when I started becoming the idiot I was.

While I wasn't too familiar with All Time Low, this is essentially a pop-punk album.

Sure, I can detail how essentially every song on this album all follow a basic yet enjoyable formula that I found enjoyment in but nothing particularly special that really stuck out to me.

Fortunately, I'm instead going to ... read more

On this episode of "Dan Decides To Review An Album Because It Looks Cool"...

"...Burn, Piano Island, Burn" is probably one of the most intriguing album names I've seen (as well as working as a great band name), and given this seemed right up my alley in genre taste, I thought this would be interesting to check it out.

First off, the instrumentation is pretty great for a post-hardcore and genuinely sounds like a good mosh to bang your head to.

Now, onto the main issue with ... read more

While this album isn't as good as STAO, it does have plenty of standouts such as Storm Against My Window, Song About Mountains, Lion Metaphor, Another Song About Mountains and the closer, Merry-Go-Round.

As for why this album isn't as good as STAO, its lo-fi production makes some of the songs literally blast against your ears (The Week Before and Pity Party Poor Me for example).

Despite that, it's still a very solid release that hints at Jack's later solo material. Worth checking out in my ... read more

This was way better than I expected.

Sparta's second album is definitely an improvement over their debut with heavier instrumentation. It's hard to really choose any standouts tracks as I thought that this album was a really enjoyable experience overall.

I'll mention a nitpick that I did find with plenty of tracks on this album though, Jim's vocals.

Now, Jim is certainly not a bad vocalist for what he is, but every time he tries to hit a long high note, it doesn't feel right with what the ... read more

On July 3, 1999, Mark Sandman would pass away from a heart attack during a rehearsal at a show in Italy, taking away one of indie's most interesting voices.

A few months later, we would get the last album that Morphine would put out, The Night. Not only is it the longest Morphine album, the first and last album to be recorded as a quartet and several guest musicians along the way, you'd also expect this to be one of their best.

Compared to their previous efforts, it's a more laidback and less ... read more

I was looking at the various genres on this website and saw this album as one of the higher-rated skate punk albums. This was later recommended to me on Spotify.

As it turns out, this is actually a band that Jeff Rosenstock was involved in and I've been meaning to get into his music for a while.

So, is it good?

While I'm not well versed in ska-punk, this sounds perfect to something that plays in the background as you're playing a Tony Hawk game or a skate video. Standouts include People Pops ... read more
