Artpop feels like a more disjointed album compared to Lady Gaga’s previous efforts. Every album prior to this came together with a consistent sound and a focus on building a new side of Gaga’s persona. Artpop doesn’t quite have the same focus. Her Artpop could mean anything, indeed.
Instead, the album jumps all over the place musically. I remember hearing “Jewels N Drugs” for the first time and thinking that someone randomly changed the album. But for the most part, it’s also full of unpleasant and dated EDM tropes which paint a good picture of pop music in 2013, as the EDM club boom was reaching its tail end. It still has its share of good tracks, but its lumped in with other tracks I could personally just do without.
Side note: Gaga really should redo “Do What U Want” with another singer. I really want to like the song but I feel guilty about liking something that involves R. Kelly. The instrumental on that track is just too good for the song to be completely forgotten.
