I can see this being regarded in the future as a modern classic, the Kid A of folk even. I was listening to some Fleet Foxes (which are amazing btw) and then decided to check out some more modern indie-folk artists. Knowing that this album is very experimental in the genre, it had me intrigued so I decided to check it out. Most of the time the experimental elements here work really well, creating an almost desolate and haunting experience, while it occasionally comes through with some beautifully flavoured synths and melodies as well, mixing with the folk elements quite nicely. On some moments however, things can sound jumbled and really off, like the occasional annoying vocal sample being repeated, or the god-awful vocoder/autotune on 715CREEKS. I can see what its overall going for, but for me the execution doesn't hit the spot. Luckily, those irritating moments are very few, and a majority of the time the experimental and electronica elements here work really well in creating the atmosphere its trying to accomplish. Incredibly well made project and looking forward to hearing more from Bon Iver, especially their more stripped-back work.
