AOTY 2019

Best song of each year (21st century)

Pretty self-explanatory.

Radiohead - Kid A
90
How To Disappear Completely

Already this is such a tough choice. I was thinking about putting Outkast's B.O.B for this spot, but in the end Radiohead just felt right. I chose to not put any of the of the songs from Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Anttenas To Heaven here because it's more of an album experience than something you just pick a song off from. Also, shout out to Eminem. MMLP is a fantastic album, where several songs are up there as some of the best of this year.
Björk - Vespertine
90
Pagan Poetry

Was about to put I Want Wind To Blow by The Microphones on here, which would've been another good choice, but then I remembered that this is from 2001 and this might be my favourite Björk song (haven't listened to all of her music though). Aerials by System Of A Down, while not being as popular as Chop Suey!, it is my favourite track off of Toxicity and was a close contender too.
Sleater-Kinney - One Beat
70
One Beat

Now, do I go with the absolute classic song in stoner rock that is No One Knows by QOTSA, or what was my introduction to the riot grrrl band Sleater-Kinney? For me, I had to go with One Beat, but No One Knows is certainly a song that has grew on me.
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Hearts of Oak
70
Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone

More people need to listen to this album!!! Ok, it might not be my favourite album ever, but it still has some unbelievable high points, such as this song. Could've picked a Xiu Xiu song, considering that A Promise is a perfect album, but it's really tough to pick just a stand-alone song from it.
Xiu Xiu - Fabulous Muscles
80
I Luv the Valley OH!

So, do I pick Madvillainy, The College Dropout, or MM...FOOD for finding the best song? The answer is neither. This might seem like I hate hip hop, but I promise that I love all them albums, it's just that this this song I selected is truly astonishing. Maybe some will call this Xiu Xiu's Creep? Considering that it is a bit more accessible than their other songs, but then again Forget is full of more accessible material, which still isn't that accessible.
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
90
Casimir Pulaski Day

I'm sorry Kanye. Yes, Late Registration is a near perfect album, in which it has Hey Mama that is easily in my top 5 Kanye West songs. This though has made me cry multiple times. What else can I say?
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
90
Nightmares

This fucking hook! It's perfect! I think that even if there was just "poopity scoops" in the verses, with this hook I'd still love this song. It's Clipse though, so the verses also meet this high standard. Also, I think this is the first hip hop song on this list, which is interesting considering people tend to think 2006 as a weak year in hip hop. At least, that's what I hear.
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
90
All My Friends

Is 2007 the best year in music? Let's just say it's certainly a contender. I think In Rainbows would be in my top 3 favourite albums ever, but this song is such an emotional rollercoaster. There's been several songs about friends or friendship, but this one, this is the one that does it the best. I'll be shocked if someone could think of a better song.
Have a Nice Life - Deathconsciousness
80
Bloodhail

Also, Walcott by Vampire Weekend was also really close, despite me not loving that album.
Fever Ray - Fever Ray
90
Keep the Streets Empty For Me

There really wasn't that much competition for me. I guess the intro for The xx's self-titled album is pretty beautiful. Despite the lack of competition, this is my favourite song on a near perfect album, which does say a lot about how good I find it.
Beach House - Teen Dream
90
Silver Soul

When I discovered Beach House it was such a magical moment and this might be my favourite song by them. Now, there's was tonnes of competition. I could've picked songs from Kanye West (especially Runaway), Ariel Pink, and The Books, but after some thought, Silver Soul is too beautiful and dreamy to not put at this spot.
Destroyer - Kaputt
100
Savage Night At The Opera

I just did a recent review of this where I said that putting all of this album on my top 50 songs of 2011 is a possibility, so I just had to put something from this album on here. Yes, it's not so much of a standout song, when compared to lengthier ones, or even the opening track Chinatown, which I was so close to picking, but this makes me feel at my most calm and free. I also used to think this was a metal band before listening from the title.
Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d. city
80
Money Trees

Is Silver Soul so good that I put it on this list twice? Honestly though, while the sample is one of my favourites, get someone like Drake or Big Sean on this track and it will not be anywhere near as good. Thankfully it's Kendrick Lamar. Jay Rock also has a superb feature, despite me not being the biggest fan of his music in general. Get Got by Death Grips was a close second.
Melt-Banana - Fetch
80
The Hive

I've seemed to seriously neglect metal on this list, but that's going to change. This song is insanity, but fun insanity. Like, I just imagine absolute chaos when hearing this. The Knife also had an amazing album this year, where I could've had several tracks off of that album.
Swans - To Be Kind
90
Oxygen

Another really intense song. Swans is probably that one band that is so popular on these websites, like one of the most popular bands, but in the world as a whole barely anyone knows them. Like, for some time they had less 100,000 monthly Spotify listeners. Anyway, whereas most of the songs on this album very slowly build up, this just starts heavy and manages to get even heavier.
Death Grips - The Powers That B
80
On GP

Yet again it's a Death Grips vs Kendrick Lamar situation, but it's Death Grips that wins it. I know On GP is the popular answer for the best Death Grips song, but in my opinion it really is, though I wouldn't say that you should listen to this if you haven't listened to any of their other songs. This really isn't a good introduction to their music.
Kanye West - The Life of Pablo
90
Saint Pablo

Yeah, I didn't include include a song from any of his past albums and instead include a TLOP track that wasn't even on the original version of the album. This is a 6 minute human masterpiece though. It's the perfect mixture of strength and vulnerability. If a song represented him best it's probably this one. And fucking Sampha is so fucking perfect.
Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me
100
Ravens

I feel a bit wrong doing this, as this is an incredibly personal album and I'm just here picking out one song from it onto this list. With that being said, listen to the whole album and not just this song. This might be odd, but I find listening to this quite therapeutic, especially when finding out my father that I haven't seen for almost 5 years was diagnosed with cancer. This calmed me down a lot of the time. This is extremely sad, but it helps me too. It's really difficult to explain.
Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
90
Satan In The Wait

I know what a lot of people are thinking. I probably only love this album and song because the melon does. I actually listened to this album and loved it since the day it was released. This is probably my favourite track off of it. The fucking intensity of it. Total Football by Parquet Courts was my favourite song of the year until this was released.
Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
80
Andromeda

This could easily change later on, as it's only April. Still, I have cried on multiple occasions listening to this song. Yes, that isn't the first time I admitted to that and that might be pathetic, but I don't care (ok, maybe I do care slightly). I feel so lonely listening to this, but like in a good way if that makes sense? Maybe I am lonely. Yeah, that's probably why.

Cool idea!

For Illinois it should've been The Predatory Wasp, For YWGWYW it should've been Long Road No Turns and for To Be Kind it should've been either Bring The Sun or Screenshot. Still a great list!

I feel that Someone Great is stronger than All My Friends, but an awesome list!

Great List! Mind if I use this idea?

@Toasterqueen12 it might be my favourite, but idk about underrated. I feel that anything on GKMC, TPAB, or DAMN is getting played a lot.

Money Trees is Kendrick's most underrated song IMO.
