Wow… this era was really hated, huh? This was an era of Bieber that completely passed me by, aside from 'Yummy', of course. Going into this record, I assumed most of the criticism was aimed at Yummy or maybe the Lil Dicky feature… but no, it’s the whole thing. This is a bad-bad album across the board.
It leans into a trap-R&B sound, a genre I’m already not too fond of, but the beat selection here is especially weak. It’s not catchy, not fun, not interesting… just kind of awkward and strange. There aren’t many redeeming qualities. Justin’s vocals do sound good at moments, but even that gets drowned out by too much crooning and odd production choices.
And for the record, Yummy isn’t even the worst offender. The chorus is undeniably cringe, but the fundamentals of the song aren't THAT terrible. The real low point is the Lil Dicky collab, that song is horrendous. "I got all up on your IG and was scrollin' down for hours. I got back to 2015 and you started lookin' young, so I stopped." Excuse me?! That’s not just a bad lyric, that’s disturbing.
Honestly, I didn’t think a Justin Bieber album could be this bad, but sadly, it is.
