The "Let Me Explain" Sessions

These are my more "controversial opinions" and I just wanted to share why I feel this way.

Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon: The End of Day
38
TBH, I don't hate every song on here. I listen to Day n' Night and Pursuit of happiness quite a lot. It's just that everything else is way to slow. Everything just sounds like Cudi ran out of energy and is just rambling through every track with no purpose in mind.
A.A.L. (Against All Logic) - 2012 - 2017
32
This is just way to harsh for me. It's apparently meant for dancing, but I can't see how that's even possible.
Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell
53
Sufjan just bores me. Even on the most exciting parts of Illinois Sufjan's singing is just so weak and generic. I'm sure he's probably talking about something interesting but I can't get passed how boring it is to fully focus on the lyrics.
Mobb Deep - The Infamous
42
....It all sounds the same to me. It sounds like every other 90's Rap Album, but without anything to make in unique.
Burial - Untrue
25
I don't get it. Like some of these "songs" are literally just recordings of the rain. The only thing keeping this off a 24/7 lo fi Hip Hop stream is that occasionally a drum break down happens.
Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians
45
Every second sounds the same. I get that's the point. That it keeps repeating over and over. Doesn't make it sound good.
Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition
49
I really want to like Danny, I really do. But he has nothing that sets him apart from anyone else, besides his voice I guess. But on XXX it's way too aggressive, on Old it's way too forgettable, and here it sounds like Danny is struggling to exist on his own album. The only time it seems like he's really trying is on "Ain't it Funny" and even than, that gets irritating after a while.
Swans - Soundtracks For The Blind
49
I just don't get the point. I don't get the point of long-ass musical interludes, then interludes of people talking about nonsense. This album is 2 hours long but you could shorten it to 10 minutes and I probably would have gotten the same experience.
Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
35
The Fleet Foxes are little whiny bitches. I don't know why I hate them so much. I just do. I can't stand their lumberjack, outdoorsy personas.
Anderson .Paak - Oxnard
53
I really don't know what separates .Paak from literally anybody else. Everything he ever made has been a blur for me.
Björk - Homogenic
53
I just can't understand why people like Björk, every song sounds the exact same to me always. Just a super squeaky voice over a violin. It's just the blandest shit to me.
Fishmans - 98.12.28 男達の別れ (98.12.28 Otokotachi no Wakare)
48
Idk what makes this special. Seems like a run of the mill live album to me. Maybe it only works if you like Fishmans.
Everything Everything - Get To Heaven
62
Now this is one I can totally understand why someone would like this. This just isn't a sound I'm a fan of. This one is 100% just me being an asshole.
The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
61
I like a small amount of songs on here, but The Velvet Underground's playing sounds like Sugar Sugar by The Archies for so much of it. I just can't tell what the point of this is.
Earl Sweatshirt - Doris
44
I hate the early Odd Future sound. It just sounds like the edgy kids in my school hallway who say something offensive and then laugh their ass off.
Death Grips - The Money Store
58
So much of Death Grips' stuff just feels...fake to me? I just don't ever feel like they have the reason to make this music. So much of the anger on Death Grips' music just feels like it's putting up an act to reach an audience.
GZA - Liquid Swords
58
I just feel like it's so phoned in. Like, "We need this sample here because that's what I did in Wu Tang. Doesn't matter that it has nothing to do with the album. "
Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Piñata
33
I just can't take Freddie Gibbs' rapping
FKA twigs - LP1
62
I've completely forgotten this thing. I don't remember how it made me feel or anything. It only remember that I thought it was kinda generic.
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92
53
It's just so boring. Nothing is tried on here. And I like a lot of Ambient. I just see no effort put into this to make it a "classic".
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
40
I'm sorry but when you open up the album with a 10 minute, boring as hell guitar solo, I'm probably not going to like the album.
Have a Nice Life - Deathconsciousness
38
Like I thought it was boring as hell the whole way through, but when it started trying to make me feel sad, I didn't want to continue listening. You have to get me to like you first before you tell me how to feel.
Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Bandana
9
WHAT!? WHAT!? WHY!? I hate this.
Comethazine - Bawskee 2
70
It's just pure energy. IDK how else to put it. I just love how action packed it feels.
SCARLXRD - INFINITY
68
I get that a lot of it is "Rawr XD" and such, but IDK I really like how much effort he puts into his screaming. It's really easy to find fun.
Tyler, the Creator - Cherry Bomb
87
I kinda look at this as the Rap version of Trout Mask Replica. Pure, nothing held back chaos.
King 810 - Suicide King
70
I'm going to be 100% honest. I just like this because there's a lot of parts where you can chant. I like Chanting.
FIDLAR - Almost Free
79
ITS TOO GOOD OK! THERE IS SO MUCH ENERGY IN THESE SONGS! I LOVE IT!
Weezer - Raditude
71
I just really love my Weezer. I like watching them try and fail to do everything. Like failing at making a party album. It's almost kinda cute in a way.
Lil Pump - Lil Pump
70
It was really innovative for it's time. I never heard anything like it before and I respect that. However, I don't like it as much anymore.
The Shaggs - Philosophy of the World
100
I see a lot of myself in this album. The failure to do something correctly, but trying. The fear of your parents. The strange stories. I totally get how people would be put off by it, but I think if I we're to ever make music, it would sound something like this.
Lil Nas X - 7
93
I don't really think this needs to be here but KingKRool said it should. I just think it's fun, and earnest. It makes me feel "comforted" or something.
Kid Cudi - Speedin' Bullet 2 Heaven
97
I just think it's beautiful. It's an extremely passionate and beautiful album.

@_zeltrxn17 NO! NOT! THE AUX! PLEASE IT'S ALL I HAVE LEFT!

I respect your opinions, and I agree on SB2H, and I sometimes relate to these, but I'll never ever pass you the AUX.

influence its had since its initial release. For me as well, Untrue has been a record to be enjoyed in the dark, when I need to completely shut off my brain. Its treatment of atmosphere had a profound impact on electronic soundscapes (and I would say also anticipated the shift toward contemporary moodiness in a lot of its production technique), which is why listening to it I feel like I'm hearing a classic. Again, just my two cents that a lot of these albums and I understand you've listed them as hot takes, work better when you appreciate the musical context they were released in. I know its certainly helped me understand a lot more records I didn't really "get" during my initial listen. Hope you have a great day!
2w
That being said, I think a lot of these records ought to be revisited in light of the context and their place in the larger music discussion landscape of the time. For me, Burial's Untrue is a good case in point. You say it sounds like "lo-fi 24/7 hip hop beats" with an occasional drum break, but to me, what makes Burial's Untrue so special (for a lot of electronic music fans) is how visionary it was for its time (a reason you yourself cite for enjoying Lil Pump's mixtape). Untrue was one of the first records to explore such darkness in electronic music, and the pitch-shifted and stretched vocals were groundbreaking during its initial release, the fact that it can be derivatively summed up as "lo-fi 24/7 hip hop" just shows you how much

I'm just going to elaborate on one of the records, but I definitely see where some of these opinions are coming from, and I completely respect that your music listening experience is yours and yours alone, so it's pointless trying to get you to adopt any "mainstream" point of view on any of these records, because that would be denying you the right to your own music listening experience, which is tied to your own personal life experiences, and not anyone else's.
2w
This is actually the biggest collection of bruh moments I've ever seen in my life
2w
Maybe give some of these albums a relisten...? I originally hated the Slauson Malone album for similar reasons why you didn't like the Freddie Gibbs album(s), but try listening to it in a different state of mind.

i request 98.12.28 be added to this list

Your ability to argue is completely fine. Say as much/little as you want about an album, even if it's "everything sounds the same." That tends to be a reason why I am not interested in a lot of albums myself.
1mo
your ability to argue is very questionable for someone who has already "appreciated" 1,267 albums/singles. you neither give examples nor elaborate your "arguments" to affirm that a certain album is good or not, besides "everything sounds the same"
1mo
Tbh all of these are understandable
1mo
ok i know I have zero reason to hate these opinions but i just kinda do im sorry
2mo
these are some hot takes
2mo
Great idea for a list. I like the fact that most of your grievances are "it sounds the same all the way through" making all your comments sound exactly the same all the way through. Think yourright on The Shaggs but wrong on Swans.
2mo
Good ideaaaa

Thanks for making this list. Wondering if you've ever revisited the records you gave low scores to, maybe in a different time in your life or a different setting? Can't count how many times I dismissed something as unappealing on first listen, only to come back to it some time later and find myself being blown away (Swans being an example) ;)
2mo
I actually don't have ears. I'm just guessing if this music is good or not.
2mo
Jk, but if you include some of the albums you like this will be even more controversial
2mo
WOW HOW DARE YOU DISLIKE WHAT I LIKE!!! YOU CANNOT HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS!!! APOLOGISE OR I WILL UNFOLLOW!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
