Instant classic gets thrown around a lot, but this is really that good. I’m continually in awe of this man.
Instant classic.
One of the very rare albums where every single song has standalone value.
This is an all timer for me good fucking lord what a leviathan of an album.
- A cornerstone album in hyperpop/PC music.
- i think about it all the time is severely underrated.
- Miss you SOPHIE
Overall a decent album, but I cannot express with words how much of a fucking banger Lonely Lyle is. Total behemoth of a song.
Might be better that Hiding Places and Aethiopes. This is also far and beyond my favorite Kenny Segal production effort.
He’s on a run on par with ‘03/04 DOOM.
The only reason this isn't like a 95+ is that the vocals overall are a little quiet. But, the instrumentals go so god damn hard that I'm not really complaining.
Favorites: Garbage Pale Kids, Burfict!, Kingdom Hearts Key, Where Ya Get Ya Coke From?
I almost wish The Hermit was it's own release. It easy stands alone as an epic journey of vivid storytelling. I already consider it up there with the likes of Dopesmoker and Microphones in 2020, in terms of long form "songs". It's unyielding beautiful, and blends nature with a futuristic veil perfectly.
The other half of the album is classic off-kilter Dawson. Love it. Easily one of my favorites this year, but The Hermit is something else entirely. Truly spiritual.
Where did this come from??? What an amazing debut. Thoroughfare is one of the most explosively addicting love songs I've ever heard.
I will be coming back to this a ton. Fucking hell it's amazing.
After a decade of waiting since his initial EP, Daniel Rossen releases one of the greats in the folk genre.
The production on this thing is immaculate, and Chris Bear delivers quite possibly his best performance out of any of the Grizzly Bear and adjacent projects. I'm just completely blown away.
I don't understand how something this stripped down can groove so hard. The songwriting is fantastic, and the emotion is absolutely there, just hidden under low energy singing and precise, airy instrumentation. The juxtaposition of the two give it so much character.
This is the perfect representation of crushing/ loving on someone that you've known forever, and not know what the fuck to do about it.
An extremely underappreciated album that just keeps sounding better as the years pass.
This is an all time hip-hop album.
I haven't heard something this fresh in the genre since Black Up by Shabazz Palaces. It will go down as a cornerstone in the genre. I can't think of much else to say. I'm just completely blown away.
Favorites:
Footwork in a Forest Fire - Like, oh my fucking god this track goes so hard
Ground Zero - I love the instrumental sample. It's so off kilter and haunting
Top Picks for You - I mean, god damn. This one hurts,
Knees - Great vocals, great instrumental.
Textured like grip tape. This is what they mean when an album has lush production. Great all the way through, but it's really back-loaded. I tend to like when an album builds up to a great finish.
Favorites: STANDOUT, Paul, Years/Alone, VICTORY LAB
It's extremely difficult to make a Bass and Drums hammer like this. Still as transfixing as the Sleep stuff, just more stripped down.
This is a perfect album. Farewell Transmission is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. That, The Old Black Hen, and Hold on Magnolia are relentlessly beautiful songs. Jason's songwriting is honest and all enveloping. He so perfectly represents depression and mental illness in these songs.
It's heatbreaking how young he died. We were robbed of one of the greatest musical talents of all time.
yo this shit B U C K S
Favorites: Delicious Things, Lipstick on the Glass, How Can I Make It OK?, Play the Greatest Hits
It's like if Blanck Mass, Iglooghost, and Kero Kero Bonito had a weird lovechild that no one really likes to talk about.
I like the overall vibe of it I guess, but it's a bit clunky. Beanis Salad is probably my favorite track.
