Let's be honest, Savage Mode II is a cold-ass album. Personally, though, I THINK the highlight must be Morgan Freeman's narration. It's a huge W. 21 Savage has officially slid into the category of rappers that are not deep lyrically but have bars (ASAP Rocky, Tyler The Creator, Vince Staples, Drake, etc)
The lines are extremely cold-hearted while still being way more emotive and energetic than his previous work. While he still sounds monotone, sluggish and sleepy, the ASMR effect only adds to the record. Young Metro does his thing with the drums but then the use of strings really makes the whole album feel more professional. Add to that the excellent interludes and trap percussion and you get a very formulaic albeit an entertaining form of rapping.
This way, most of the inconsistencies are covered by transitions and professional production choices. They both put out their A-game and it's unbelievable how far the duo has progressed. It's almost like 21's ad-libs fit into any Metro beat, these two have a lot of chemistry.
As far as minimalist, sleepy trap goes this is the apex and is far beyond the content on its predecessor.
While this thing might grow down on me with time, for now, it's a great little trap project. Have to say the Snitches and Rats interlude and the phase post it is the best work on the whole LP.
Best Tracks: Runnin, Many Men, Snitches and Rats Interlude, Snitches and Rats, Stepping on N----s, No Opp Left Behind, RIP Luv
Worst Tracks: My Dawg, Mr. Right Now feat. Drake (awful mixing on drakes verse)
