Porter Robinson - Nurture

Cutest fucking thing I ever heard. If you can see him live, do not hesitate. Being a Porter fan has been a wild ride the past 10 years, but this album is such a triumph in every sense of the word. Love this dude

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois

It's like an entire orchestra where each individual musician is mic'd. Intimate and massive all at the same time. Such a wild ride

Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell

Haunting, emotional, subtle, and beautiful. So hard to find the words to describe it. One of those ones that's so good that you don't want to listen to it super often, for fear of ruining the magic

Fever Ray - Radical Romantics

Kandy and Carbon Dioxide go dummy hard

Paul Simon - Graceland

There's a lot to love here, and a few things to loathe. The good tracks are REALLY good. Diamonds..., Graceland, You Can Call Me Al are all classics that have withstood the test of time.

I found that a lot of the African influence sounds like it was inserted more as a novelty than anything else. I think it works in some tracks, but sounds corny and appropriative in others. There's also a few GOOFY-ass moments on this album. That Was Your Mother is a legitimately terrible circus-tent bop ... read more

Could it really be THAT bad? Yes, yes it is. It seems like will.i.am tried to bridge the language barrier and in doing so insults both sides with his hooked-on-phonics ass English lyrics ("I make it rain like weather") and his first-week-of-Duolingo Spanish lyrics. Not to mention the geriatric GarageBand production, and somehow even dumbing the features down to his brain-dead level.

This isn't worth your time, trust. It's soulless content-mill trash.

Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun

If I hadn't looked, I would've had no idea when this record came out. It's so groovy and timeless. Penitentiary Philosophy is such a strong opener and sets the pace of the album really well. This record is 14 of the best neo-soul tracks there are

And the goddamn PRODUCTION QUALITY. I can hear EVERY little detail in the instruments like I'm in the studio with them. Importantly though, you don't need to be an audio dork to enjoy this record; it holds up to scrutiny, and also bumps hard in ... read more

Tainy - DATA

Among a few skips, there's some really great stuff on this record. I loved the singles I'd heard (MOJABI GHOST, Sci-Fi, etc.) and was worried those would be the best on the record, but was pleasantly surprised. The synthwave/cyberpunk theme was a great touch and carried well through the project. I don't speak a ton of Spanish, but Tainy transcended language and blessed us with some incredible slappers

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

YOU CAN NORMALIZE! DON'T IT MAKE YOU FEEL ALIVE!

A dance-punk classic that has yet to be beaten. You can't help but do a little head bop as you type at your laptop while you listen to it in your boring office. All My Friends is one of those tracks that just... captures the essence of life, in a way? It's the soundtrack to every awesome night I've had in my entire life. This record captures a very specific sincere yet aloof vibe that's hard to describe and can't really be found elsewhere. Worth ... read more

This is the absolute best way to make a pop record. This album makes me feel so alive. It's epic and tragic and heartfelt and beautiful all the way through. Idk where to even start. Midnight City is a PERFECT 10/10 pop song that never gets old. Even back when it was on the radio, it was always a joy to hear. So many other classics, too; Wait, Claudia Lewis, My Tears Are Becoming a Sea, Ok Pal, Steve McQueen, and the incredible post-rock anthem Outro, which is a fitting end for this ... read more

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation

The apocalyptic concept on this one is devastating and cool as hell; perfect marriage of music and narrative. Shit rocks so hard and really feels like the impending apocalypse we've created for ourselves. The album art is also one of the most memorable I've seen in a long time

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Nonagon Infinity

This shit rocks so disrespectfully hard. High-velocity, fun, and loud as hell from top to bottom. Robot Stop is an incredible opener that sets the tone for the whole record.

It fucking WRAPS BACK AROUND ON ITSELF. What a cool concept.

It loses a little steam on the second disk, but the energy of the first half and the finale more than makes up for that. Mr. Beat isn't my favorite, but feels like a necessary addition to spare the live audience's ears for a few minutes.
