TW: Before you go through this list, I would HIGHLY recommend reading through when your mental health is at it's best. If you're not feeling good mentally, please take a break or wait another time and seek help from your friends, family or from a professional. Viewer discretion is advised.
Welcome everyone to the continuation of the Imaginable Series!
What got me interested in listening to music was reading the lyrics on my favorite songs. They leave an impression in our minds that carry on in our lives for better or for worse. I'll sometimes hear a song that makes me feel happy, sad, motivated, depressing, hyped, or even confused at times. As part of the narrative for the Depression Saga, I asked my followers, friends, and people alike for their pick of the most gut-wrenching/depressing lyrics they have ever heard in a song. These lyrics gathered here fit the description of being hopeless, depressing, cathartic, gut-wrenching, or thought-provoking on the human senses.
My inspiration for creating this list was actually from revisiting Radiohead as a grown adult. I started posting some reviews on singles and albums from the bands discography and created this lore of madness. I started cataloging my findings through a separate list of advice matching the song's or album's themes. You can check here if you're interested: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/treadcarefully/list/137885/radiohead-the-depression-saga/
Each album and song will have some sort of trigger warning for readers to help understand the context behind each song pick. Again be warned: some of these picks are disturbing and depressing. I will further update this list with other suggestions. Feel free to submit your pick at anytime in the comments or in my shoutbox! In the future, I'll have one more list to end this series as a trilogy.
Thank you to everyone for their awesome contribution!
Cheers!

TW: DRUG ABUSE | OVERDOSE
Song: Dunno
As tradition, I'll have two picks: a rap song and a non-rap song. My favorite song I go to for comfort and to convince me that everything is okay even when life is falling apart. I decided with the last few line of the song. Before Mac's death, these lines were filled with hope. Unfortunately, in context of his passing, the lines are now bittersweet.
"I think we just might be alright
Thank god
I think we're gonna be alright, alright, okay"
I mentioned this in my extensive review of Swimming regarding this song, but one person (rumpertumskin) on Genius definitely put the nail in the coffin with these lines: "Listening to this posthumously, it’s tough to listen to him lie to himself." He really wasn't alright....
TW: DEATH | AFTERLIFE | GRIEF | TRAGEDY

Song: True Love Waits
@mitsnik- This shit is to destroy anyone, I honestly don't even need to mark any specific part because any part hurts more than a stab right in the middle of the heart.
@Marshall4Real
"I'm not living, I'm just killing time."
@Afvalcontainer- If I had to pick one line though, it would probably be this line from True Love Waits by Radiohead:
"Just don't leave
Don't leave"
The lyrics are pretty standard, but the story behind it and the context makes it really heartbreaking and depressing to me.
@ikmmm- It's an obvious answer and it's probably been said already, but pretty much the entirety of Radiohead's True Love Waits is really depressing. It's probably the first and only song that made me cry solely because of the lyrics.
"I'll drown my beliefs
To have your babies
I'll dress like your niece
And wash your swollen feet"
"Just don't leave
Don't leave"
"I'm not living
I'm just killing time"
"And true love lives
On lollipops and crisps"

Song: As The World Caves In
The whole song is just so apocalyptic and beautiful to me.
specifically the final chorus:
“Oh, girl, it's you that I lie with
As the atom bomb locks in
Oh, it's you I watch TV with
As the world, as the world caves—
Oh, it's you that I lie with
As the atom bomb locks in
Yes, it’s you I welcome death with
As the world, as the world caves in
As the world caves in”
TW: BRUH MY HEART
@Jenkies's Pick
Song: Everything's Alright performed by Laura Shigihara
The lyrics always hit me in the feels to an egregious extent.
"When this world is no more
The moon is all we'll see
I'll ask you to fly away with me
Until the stars all fall down
They empty from the sky
But I don't mind
If you're with me, then everything's alright"
TW: SUICIDE
Song: The Viaduct Love Suicide
@Whynot's Pick
If you have not listened to it, please do it (full album is incredible by the way).
"A little piece of it:
"But we’re turning to air

You made my life, son

And she stepped from the bridge
With her child in her arms
To join with the earth
No providence harms..."

TW: DEPRESSION | SUICIDE | ANIMAL ABUSE |VIOLENCE | EMPTINESS | DEATH
@Money Calling's Pick
1. Song: Hunter
The whole song Hunter by Have A Nice Life is pretty harrowing. The lyrics come from the perspective of a wounded animal finally accepting its demise and giving itself up to the hunter's vicious and cruel ways. It does not care about its impending death, as long as someone, i.e. the hunter, is satisfied in the end. Hunter is such a grueling and bittersweet song, especially in the context of the whole album.
Some lines:
"Teeth and hate end our relationship
Of course it's sad, but that's the way it is
Your violence always wins the day
Yes, your violence wins
And I'll give myself up to your sharpened edges
I no longer cling to my life
Yes, I'm finally giving in"

2. Song: Earthmover
"An army of the golems is stalking, now, the heart's lands
Eating all reality
Producing only dust and sand
Nothing hurts them
Nothing gets under their stone skin
And when their earthen mouths will open up
And just what words will come out but
"We wish we were dead"
@willoom- Sad :(

3. Song: I Don't Love
My pick is the song “I Dont Love” by HANL. the song is basically the musical embodiment of hopelessness.
Ex.
"I don't want to feel this anymore
But if I don't, that's fake
I don't want to do this anymore
But there's nothing else to take
I don't love
I don't feel anything

1. Song: I Want You To Know That I’m Awake/i Hope That You’re Asleep
My pick would be for I Want You To Know I’m Awake/ I Hope Your Asleep by Car seat Headrest and It’d be that entire “we’re not like them” part is the most honest, and heart wrenching lyrics I’ve ever heard. Will’s shaky delivery tied in with constant examples of heartbreak and refrains, FUCK ME UP so badly, and they make the song an extremely powerful juxtaposition of Will and his partner’s love. The part I selected would the very last verse specifically.
“Your parents and my parents, well, let's not get into that
'Cause we're not like them, we are nothing like them
Degnan and Skippy haven't spoken for a while
But we're not like them, no, we're nothing like them, no”

Song: On GP
@holysmokes- I'd definitely go with "Won't let you know when I get going, phone ring too long" from On GP by Death Grips, that line leaves me devastated every time I hear it.
@Mup- I jumped to On GP by Death Grips, specifically
"Last night, 3:30 in the morning, Death on my front porch
Can feel him itching to take me with him, hail death
Fuck you waiting for?
Like a question no one mention
He turns around, hands me his weapon
He slurs, "Use at your own discretion, it's been a pleasure, Stefan""
@kittenwatermeme- 'I've heard tons of depressing stuff. I'll pick "On GP" by Death Grips. On GP is pretty much the darkest song Death Grips has ever made.
"My friends and family won't understand
So I stay in the end, don't make none to me
If it wasn't for them, I'd make that decision
On GP
Had to do it all again, I'd make that decision
On GP"

1. Song: The Only Thing
Carrie & Lowell is already a pretty miserable album as is, but the song The Only Thing has to be one of the most depressing, gut-wrenching songs I have ever heard in my life. Despite being a melancholy tune with hypnotic strums, Sufjan's lyrics in this song are absolutely and wholly depressing. This album largely helped me through one of the most miserable times of my life (bad breakup, horrible high school experience, felt very alone and suicidal at age 17). I'm 22 now and I still go back to that album when seeking solace and comfort.
"The only reason why I continue at all / Faith in reason, I wasted my life playing dumb / Signs and wonders, sea lion caves in the dark/ Blind faith, God's grace, nothing else left to impart /Do I care if I survive this, bury the dead where they're found / In a veil of great surprises, hold to my head till I drown / Should I tear my eyes out now, before I see too much?"

On uboa’s “misspent youth” is so heartbreaking.
She’s showing that if the right-wing heaven and hell was true she would be okay with eternal suffering as long as she stays herself there. it’s an amazing jab at transphobic christian beliefs and basically says “i’ll always be who i am no matter if i’m being tormented by the devil himself”, but also extremely depressing knowing she would be suffering even more after her many struggles as a trans woman.

The song "Top Picks For You" by Injury Reserve. That song is still to this, a very haunting song about a loss of a closed one, and this lyric really made a huge impact on me, emotionally.
"I look across the table, I see a lot more than what appears to be a shadow
He walks across the room, I see a lot more than seems to be patterns
I scan the room, I see bits and pieces of you scattered
It's those same patterns that gon' get us through the next chapter
You blow up through this home, your habits do much after
Grab the remote, pops up something you would've watched, I'm like
"Classic, this some shit I would'a seen you watch and then just laughed at"

Song: Dance With The Devil
@Sinjei- This song is one of the darkest and most fucked up songs I've ever heard, so a massive disclaimer if you do decide to listen to it... Its REALLY messed up.
I really can't pick a section or lyrical part as the whole song is full of absolute gut-wrenching and shocking lines that dont make sense without context from the entire song.
Its a track that just really fucked with me for ages after i first heard it. It's a song that really opened my eyes and really shocked me, especially how the song follows a true story.
Which made it way worse.
The lore and story behind the writing of this song is really fascinating as well...
@daFaithid- There has been a lot of songs that I’ve listened to in my lifetime that are depressing or gut-wrenching that have left an impact on me. None more so than Immortal Technique’s “Dance With The Devil”.
Infamous for being perhaps the most disturbing song ever made it very much needs TWs for r*pe and suicide. It’s a story track and the lyrics I’m selecting are from the ending so spoiler warning.
@sweaty_ballz-4th verse on Dance with the Devil by Immortal Technique. Both gut-wrenching and depressing
Unfortunately, I ran out of room for the blurb to fit the 4th verse, but that makes it better for everyone to hear the tale for themselves without any spoilers...

And I don't feel much like singing
Can't see what for
And there ain't no comfort in this life
Anymore
All that I can see that's ahead of me
Looks like such a chore
Maybe something will happen
To make it all better, better
Maybe something will come along
And make me happy, happy
There ain't no fun in living
Anymore
And I don't feel much like living
Can't see what for
There ain't no life left in me, I feel a bit funny
Like a ghost with nowhere to go
My hope is gone and left me
A desperate man
There’s no spunk left in me
I feel so hollow in me
So empty, so empty, so empty, so empty
A big chunk of what I was is gone
And left me a desperate man
Now I'm a desperate man
A lonely, scared, sad, sorry man
And I just can’t see no color
In the sky anymore
There's color there, I'm sure
But it ain't mine and it's made me blind
A desperate man, desperate
I’m a desperate man"

The song "So You Wanna Be A Superhero" by Carrisa's Wierd is definitively the most depressing I know.
"There's banging on the wall
It's 5 am, I've got no sleep at all
Just thoughts of how I might
Struggle through tomorrow
Too much time in one day
Too much time to occupy
With boring thoughts
And boring moods

Song: Picture Me Better
At the moment, it HAS to be basically the entirety of "Picture Me Better" by Weyes Blood. There's definitely more lyrics out there I've heard that are more instantaneous, concrete, raw, or even just flooded with pain, but the lyrics in "Picture Me Better" being sung with such a poised, yet heartbroken delivery makes each word that much more deliberate and feel so personal to the point where we also know the person Natalie is singing about (who was apparently a very close friend of Natalie's that had committed suicide during the months before the album released).
The saddest and probably most touching section is Verse/Chorus 2:
"Picture us better
We finally found a winter for your sweater
Got a brand new big suit of armor, it's tough
Since you left, I've grown so much
If I could have seen you just once more
Tell you how much you're adored

Song: Fragments
I'm gonna choose Fragments by yeule. The song itself is a haunting masterpiece, and the lyrics, while there are few, convey such somberness.

I'll hold you
'Til I stop the pain hurting you"

TW: LYNCHING | DEATH | MURDER | INFANTICIDE
@kirumi's Pick
Song: Mary Turner Mary Turner
I’m sure a few people are going to pick this one. Absolutely horrific (true) story about a lynching that gets more and more brutal as the story goes on. I think the thing that really puts me on edge is that the story is REAL. It actually happened in real life, and shows how truly twisted people can be. One of the only tracks that made me physically recoil.
I’m not sure how close it fits the theme you had, but it is unbelievably depressing knowing tragic things like that happen. And it’s impossible to know how much of it never actually gets covered by the media, which makes it even more terrifying.
"Mary Turner, Mary Turner
Mary Hattie Graham
19 years old and pregnant
Hazel Turner, Hazel Turner
Murdered by a lynch mob
She declares his crime a crime
And running for her life
She is, she is captured
Captured at Folsom Bridge
Gasoline and motor oil smeared on her clothes
She is hung up by her ankles from the tree
A match is struck and she is set ablaze
Mary Turner, Mary Turner
While still burning
Mary Turner, Mary Turner
While still alive
Split open with a knife
From her womb onto the ground
Looking up the first and only light it ever sees
The flames, the flame of its mother's burning, burning
Reaching out the first and only loving touch it receives
The falling ash of its mommy's hair on fire
The baby, baby cried in the dirt
Quieted, quieted by a boot's heel
Mother and child, mother and child
999 more bullets from the crowd
Mary Turner, Mary Turner
Buried where they were murdered
A cigar stuffed in a whiskey jug
A whiskey jug to mark the grave
Fuck your guns
Fuck your war
Fuck your truck
Fuck your flag"

The first set of lyrics that come to mind are from Famous Prophets (Stars) by Car Seat Headrest.
"Don't get too impressed
You might lose your breath
Don't predict your death
'Cause I like you the best
Don't you fall apart
You might lose my heart
You know I love your art"
Followed by a lot of “the ocean washed over your grave”s and really just until the end of that section of the song
Every time I listen to this song in the context of the album I cry for like a minute straight without fail haha
I think my reason for it hitting so hard might be different from the “intended” meaning
But it just makes me think, about my friends, about myself, about a lot
it makes me think a lot ahaha

TW: DEPRESSION | DRUG ABUSE | DEATH | PASSIVE SUICIDAL THOUGHTS
@Yahweh's Pick
Song: Good News
My selection comes from the posthumous single, "Good News", by Mac Miller. Basically, Mac harps on the expectations placed on him to be happy when, in reality, he's far from okay, suppressing his true feelings in order to appease others. I went with the chorus as it encapsulates the crushing nature of the song's themes perfectly.
"Good news, good news, good news
That's all they wanna hear
No, they don't like it when I'm down
But when I'm flyin', oh
It make 'em so uncomfortable
So different, what's the difference?"
The lyrics are especially gut-wrenching to digest when you consider that the song was recorded before his sudden passing. Unfortunately, he was still undergoing constant turmoil with his inner demons at the time. Imagine suffering from depression and having your problems misunderstood or falling on deaf ears. I perceive "Good News" as a call to help that was ultimately never answered.

1. Song: Muzzle of Bees
I would have to choose the song Muzzle Of Bees by Wilco. The song doesn’t really have a clear meaning, but its lyrics make me cry when I hear them.
"I'm assuming you got my message
On your machine
I'm assuming you love me
And you know what that means"
There is just something about the lyrics that make me emotional whenever I hear them.
@montythegreat's Pick
2. Song: Less Than You Think
Less Than You Think by Wilco. it's not exactly depressing, but it is very much about depression, and it just evokes such a powerful feeling of trying your hardest to get out of a deeply troubled mental state, and being able to see a glimmer of hope just beyond your reach. It's pretty much the resolution to an hour long opus about frontman Jeff Tweedy's opioid addiction and him tearing himself apart through some really beautiful lyrics on the whole album.
"Your mind's a machine
It's deadly and dull
It's never been still and its will
Has never been free
Lightly tapping
A high-pitched drum
As your spine starts to shine
You shiver at your soul
A fist so clear and climbing
Punches a hole
In the sky
So you can see
For yourself
If you don't believe me
There's so much less
To this than you think
It's almost gone
The night is dissolving
In a cup God lifts
To toast the lightning
Lightly tapping
It's high-pitched and it hums
Your spine starts to shine
And you shiver at your soul
A fist so clear and climbing
Punches a hole
In the sky
So you can see
For yourself
If you don't believe me
There's so much less
To this than you think."

Song: Rest
For gut-wrenching, I’m gonna go for a more recent song and choose Rest by Foo Fighters. The song is a tribute to their drummer who died, and the lyrics are absolutely gut-wrenching. it’s also a tribute to Dave’s mother. If I had to pick a specific line or lyrics, then I would go with the chorus
“Rest, you can rest now
Rest, you will be safe now
Rest, you can rest now
Rest, you will be saved now”
Not only was this one of the most emotionally jarring things I’ve heard all year, but this song probably brought me to closest to crying out of every song that I have heard. While I haven’t cried, every time I listen to this song, I get very close to. I really don’t know. These lyrics just fucked me up hard.

Song: Cancer
There are a bunch of heavy (mostly bittersweet) lyrics on the Black Parade, but there's a segment from their song Cancer that has always really stuck with me.
"Call my aunt Marie
Help her gather all my things
And bury me
In all my favorite colors"
Now this whole song is really blunt with its delivery throughout, but there's more to this fragment than just a bold description of a dying cancer patient's thought process. It feels so bittersweet. I can't really put into words what exactly it makes me feel/imagine, but I think it's mostly the idea of someone's last wish being something as child-like and innocent as being buried in their favorite colors. Throughout my whole life I've wondered and imagined many times what it would be like if I died that day. What people's reactions would be, what my funeral would like, etc. Truthfully, *I* would want to be buried in my favorite colors.
TW: DEPRESSION | HOPELESSNESS
@Doommit's Pick
Song: Broken
I think I'll pick a few lines from the second verse from Little Simz's "Broken" from her latest album "NO THANK YOU":
"What does it mean to be broken?
Feels like your light has been stolen
Can't recognise you are golden
And you don't see that you're loved
Smokin' weed on your ones, isolatin' yourself
"Am I even enough?", then you question yourself
"Man, this week has been tough," been sayin' that for a year
How do I disappear? Can I hide from my fears?
Sometimes, a feather can feel like a stone
When your soul weak, you can feel that shit in your bones"
I know it may seem corny but, especially considering the context of the song that, in my opinion, portrays perfectly the paranoia, the struggles and anxiety of growing up, it's so awfully relatable, I genuinely get goosebumps all time that this tracks play.
TW: POVERTY | DISASTER | PTSD

Song: Roaches
The song Roaches by Maxo Kream is an incredibly depressing story-telling track where Maxo reminisces about his days growing up in the hood with his family. The second half in particular, tells a story about how his family was hit by a hurricane and how he couldn't do anything about it. The entire verse is amazing, but one line really stood out to me
"But sometimes, God, He'll bless you and test you,
Every day I say my grace because I could've lost my people."
This line is really powerful and constantly reminds me to be thankful for my family and friends because you'll never know when they'll be gone.

I thought about it for a while and I'll probably have to say these lyrics from a German song called Der Weg - Herbert Grönemeyer, which is about grief and moving on after a loved one's passing:
"Ich gehe nicht weg, hab' meine Frist verlängert
Neue Zeitreise, offene Welt
Habe dich sicher in meiner Seele
Ich trag' dich bei mir, bis der Vorhang fällt
Ich trag' dich bei mir, bis der Vorhang fällt"
It roughly translates to (I'm not that great at German so please excuse any mistakes):
"I will not leave, I've extended my stay
New time travel, open world
I have you securely in my soul
I'll carry you with me, until the curtain's falls
I'll carry you with me, until the curtain's falls"
It gets me everytime

Song: Cleanin' Out My Closet
I could pick Eminem's chorus of "Cleanin' Out My Closest...
Yes, Cleanin' Out My Closet's a diss towards his mom, but unlike how he was over his recent albums as of late then he's actually dissing her for a pretty damn heartbreaking reason instead of throwing temper tantrums at everybody (Kamikaze is a good example). I felt like he really poured his tears, sweat and blood into the song itself, so naturally the hook really hit me when I gave it more relistens.
The chorus in question:
"I'm sorry, Mama
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant to make you cry
But tonight I'm cleanin' out my closet"

Song: Kim
One of the lines off of "Kim" (on The Marshall Mathers LP) by the same man.
As for the "Kim" song then I'd say that the "But we were kids then Kim, I was only 18" line really kinda irked me in a way. Imo it doesn't apply to just relationships or killing your wife (yes, "Kim" really is that) You have new people you meet/see every day of life (whether online or irl), and some become friends when you or they come together to form that bond, some get along with you more than others. Of course, nothing lasts forever, and "Kim" really emphasized that for me. You have someone who means a lot to you, someone to whom you really dedicated your whatever amount of years on Earth with them, you and them would have to separate one day, one way or another. And of course Em fucking kills his wife in the song but it goes the same for the thing I said about it not just applying to relationships, you could just separate due to change(s) of interest or something like the moments in the "Kim" song with even your closest ones. It put quite some existential dread in me when I really thought about it a lot more, but I've gotten over it and I can now really appreciate every second that I get along with someone else better now :')

Song: Broken Birds (Rest in Pieces)
"Maybe they poured glue on your pet tarantulas
Maybe they got stuck to each other and tore themselves apart"
Not only does this line give me this vivid picture in my mind of two spiders tearing themselves apart. But it's also a symbolism for the struggle of keeping your life together. As the spiders ("you") try to get out of the situation they are in, they slowly tear themselves apart and cause their own deaths. And mixed with the songs instrumentals going silent when this line is said, really made it stick with me.

1. Song: Motion Picture Soundtrack
My pick is the line "I will see you in the next life" from Radiohead's "Motion Picture Soundtrack". When I first listened to Kid A a few months ago I was absolutely stunned but this line really topped off the whole experience and left me in genuine fucking shock. It's just so depressing but also beautiful and optimistic with the context and message of the project. It's one of the few times in recent memory where a song has left me speechless. I stared at the fucking floor for about half an hour after that first listen. Definitely one of the most depressing things I've heard. Insane stuff.

2. Song: How To Disappear Completely
This is a pretty obvious pick, but I'm not really the type of person to remember specific lyrics so this was the first one that I could think of, and it's perfect since I saw that you've been on a Radiohead binge recently (still going).
Compared to most songs, this has surprisingly few lyrics but the lyrics that it does have are heavily emphasized which helps the lyrical content be more potent. The instrumental is atmospheric and lets Thom Yorke's singing shine. The way he delivers the lyrics are also perfect, as he isn't just screaming them, but he's eerily reserved, like's he's not even present within his own body. Every time I listen to the track I get Goosebumps because the song comes from a genuine place and is perfect for whenever I need to get away from everything else.
"I walk through walls
I float down the Liffey
I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here
I'm not here"

Song: Frankie Teardrop
Any part of Frankie Teardrop by Suicide. That song is just damn haunting and it makes me break down whenever I hear it.
"Frankie's so desperate
He's gonna kill his wife and kid
Frankie's gonna kill his kid, hmm
Frankie picked up a gun, hmm
Pointed at the six month old kid in the crib
Oh, Frankie"

Song: 6 PM in New York
"Some nights I wish I could go back in life
Not to change shit, just to feel a couple things twice"
I used to be a huge rap-head when I first heard this song/project, so this was the lyric that instantly came to my mind. When I first heard the mixtape 6PM In New York's on, I wasn't really on my peak lol. I don't really want to get into it, but let's say I still remember the feeling when I first heard this lines. And from a "rapper" I don't really like, it hit harder than it should have.

Song: Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Honestly, I don’t get very emotional from any work of fiction, really. Just say “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” by Pink Floyd from the album Wish You Were Here, specifically this lyric:
“You were caught in the crossfire of Childhood and Stardom, blown on the see breeze, come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine.”
This averts the whole fiction thing I mentioned earlier because they are describing a real person, former frontman Syd Barrett, who went insane from LSD use. Pretty heavy stuff. I’d recommend to read more about it in your own time.

Song: Disposable Heroes
Song is about the horrors of warfare and how we or soldiers rather become shells of their former selves. Transformed by the horrors they witness and even participate in.
"Life planned out before my birth, nothing could I say
Had no chance to see myself, molded day by day
Looking back I realize, nothing have I done
Left to die with only friend, alone, I clench my gun"
