J-pop icon Utada Hikaru’s 6th full Japanese album ‘Fantôme’ was released in 2016, 8 years after her last Japanese album. Utada had taken a long break from music to heal from the wounds of her personal life, including the death of her mother and her divorce from her husband. What arose from Utada’s return to music is not only her best album by far - but an essential album in J-pop history which cemented Utada as one of the most compelling pop songwriters of not just ... read more

For a couple of weeks I was worried for Yukika, after the release of her stellar 2020 album 'Soul Lady', she split from Estimate Entertainment and fans were left unsure of what was next for her career... but luckily she signed with UBT Entertainment and now she's back with a new look and the new pre-release single for her first mini album is here!

'Lovemonth' is as sparkly, glitzy and shimmery as her previous work, perhaps even moreso. You can clearly hear that her vocals have improved as ... read more

I'm stunned honestly, this album is not only a stand out in City Pop for me but in Pop music in general. Perhaps I'm just high on those gorgeous soaring synths that pull the production along but I've genuinely had such a god experience with this album. Cologne somewhat reminds me of if Kate Bush had an identity crisis and moved to Japan to become a city pop artist - in the best way. Kaoru is able to take relatively simple new music tropes and spin them in the best way possible. Strong and ... read more

God I love this band so much...

Judging from the single and ep art this civilisation series is likely going to see us following KKB on a trip through time. Civilisation I showed felt like it was from a primitive society trying to grow yet being knocked down by natural disasters. Now judging from the lead single 'The Princess and the Clock', Civilisation II is gonna jump forward to medieval societies.

Now onto the actual sound of the song itself , it's adorable as always. Instrumentally it's ... read more

The only sliver of credit I can muster up for this creature is that she somehow manages to lower the bar with every release. I genuinely fail to see how this was allowed to be released given that it's fucking ear torture that surely violates human rights laws across the world. Genuinely egregious... I'd rather listen to Chromat- okay it's not that bad but still. Stay away!!

With 'One Shot, Two Shot' we see BoA taking the post 4 walls/View trend of house in K-pop and fusing it with her own songwriting. I love the title track, it's simple yet so catchy and her higher vocals in the chorus are addictive to listen to. The airy tropical-ness of 'Everybody Knows' makes what could've been a basic track nice to listen to, the tropical vibe continues on 'Nega Dola' which is filled to the brim with hooks - the synths and harmonies are particularly effective here without ... read more

Hey, nice reviews!
Here's a question. Since, I've seen YUKIKA get a lot of attention recently. & I see that you enjoyed the album quite a bit.
As somebody who usually doesn't like K-Pop at all, would it be a good place to start? Is it accessible to a total beginner to K-Pop?
