Not gonna lie, Lana has had a rough year so far.

And that's ironic! A few months right after she released her critically-acclaimed near-masterpiece "Norman Fucking Rockwell!", she went on various petty tirades on Instagram about "what it means to be a female musician in the culture today." To be fair, in these posts, I think her wording was just so rushed and one-note that it came across in a manner that wasn't supposed to be interpreted. She was rightfully ridiculed by various communities (some going very far to harm her career), but now, it's mostly blown over through the sweltering summer breeze of this year. Honestly, stuff like this happens to a lot of people at some point in their career.

Under a quiet release on a Tuesday, she released her highly-anticipated spoken word record "Violent Bent Backwards Over the Grass", which was advertised more as an audiobook more than anything else. Guess that's spoken word for you.

It's is visceral, fragile, and humbling. Punctuated by the eloquent delivery from a heartbreaking, yearning tone, Lana's voice is just as sweet and sultry as it is on her other records. However, the lyrics here evolve her voice to be quite comforting as well as worrying, her cadence very pointed yet wavy. It's these changes in the subtle word choice and rhythm that showcase this record's main highlight: it's honesty.

Backing Lana's closely-recorded speech is some of the most relaxing ambient, paired with chord progressions reminiscent of her latest musical endeavors. This album's production is also very particular, sometimes wrapped in nostalgic white noise, chaotic distortion, and chromatic dissonance. All the more relaxing and familiar, Lana's highly-anticipated spoken word record beautifully delivers its promises in beautiful hypnagogia and reflective sadness, once quiet, subtle moods in her music now fully, and shamelessly, on display.
