"The Man Who Built the Moon", "Dead In the Water"
first heard it a year ago - in october 2016, turned out to be one of my favourite records all-around.
Those b-sides may lack the power of the My Woman's songs but they still carry the lovely Olsen's aesthetics. Problem is - there are few great pieces like Special, Sweet Dreams and Tougher Than the Rest, combined with unlistenable songs. Can't really find enough reasons to give it at least 80, as much as I want to.
Getting Sodas is a stormingly great song, +2 score because of it.
Banger after banger, one of the best NZ records for sure. You will find it absolutely delightful if you're into post-punk/ new wave/ power pop
This is a nice selection of emblematic songs from the New Zealand scene. It's mainly consisted of indie rock, punk rock and post punk but you can also hear some ska and even synth-pop. It was first released in august 1988 and got remastered in 2003.
Favourites:
The Screaming Meemees - See Me Go (stand out)
The Swingers - One Good Reason
Penknife Glides - Taking The Weight Off
Blam Blam Blam - There Is No Depression In New Zealand
The Tall Dwarfs - Nothing's Going To Happen (stand out)

the first 4-5 songs were great and then suddenly it went craps until the end
There is a whole concert from the CBGB's here and it's absolutely terrific. Need I say more?
i still can't get all the hate this record brought in. i mean, yeah okay - the band has moved away from it's tradditional sound (never been a fan), but so what? what we have here is a pretty fine pop record and i feel that Kaiser Chiefs were always pop anyways.
Dunno, this is enjoyable with Why Do You Do It to Me? being my fave. My 5 cents, man.
i haven't enjoyed a hardcore record for quite a long time, probably 5-6 years. this one is great.
"Are we no one's passion or have we just lost our own?"
After 3 play-throughs - it's way too commercial, with captivating choruses and stuff. Nothing really brilliant but a solid record, anyway. The b-sides are fun.
Everything else stands the same:
Did we really have to wait 4 years for this?!
I have to listen to it 2 or 3 times more in order to rate. But first impression - a significant step backwards. Nothing memorable either musically or lyrically. Nothing really new in their style. Some big hooks and choruses but they're just comercially ... read more
magnificient new wave record, gets really delicious at the end - Priviledge, Outside, Saved By Zero, but it's full of other gems, as well.
I remember those guys from "Conversation Piece" which was released in 2011 and was full of experimental post-hardcore tunes. It stood out.
6 years later they've made a huge move away from that hardcore sound as they have no extreme vocals which I liked a lot back in 2011. (I still like them.). Plus, they're not that negative as they were before.
But they continue to stood out despite all the changes in their sound. I especially liked the second part (songs 7-12) which is heavier than ... read more
