Yeasayer - Erotic Reruns
Jun 17, 2019

As opportunistic as anything I’ve heard this year, “Erotic Reruns” seems purely determined to capture the festival and commercial success of electropop-masquerading-as-alternative bands like Portugal. The Man and Fitz & The Tantrums. All the familiar ingredients are there — incessant high-pitched singing, ostensible but barely discernible psychedelic influence, unrelenting positivity. Yeasayer execute this formula respectably enough, and “Erotic Reruns” could soundtrack a car commercial as anything else, but it’s a grating listen. The vague upbeat songwriting is downright irritating, and the pervading lack of substance makes the album feel slighter than its 29 minutes.
