Mitski - Bury Me at Makeout Creek

“Bury Me At Makeout Creek” was something of a slow-burner that paved the ground for her subsequent breakout “Puberty 2,” and it’s easy to see why. Mitski reveals herself here as both a strong interpreter of the past two decades of indie rock and an original in her own right. She’s not afraid to rock out, but it’s startling how calmly she delivers some of her more gut-punching lyrics. She’s wise to let these words speak for themselves, and it enables her to achieve maximum emotional impact across a number of musical moods: the high-powered energy of “Townie” and the slow build of “First Love/Late Spring” are entirely different approaches that hit equally hard. “Bury Me At Makeout Creek” manages a veritable emotional rollercoaster over a mere 30 minutes.
