Du Blonde - Homecoming

“Homecoming” doesn’t even clear the 25 minute mark, and yet this was a massive endurance test for me. Du Blonde was on my radar as a fuzzy indie rock artist, but “Homecoming” sounds more like a hardcore garage punk album with vocals that wouldn’t be out of place in a metal setting. This is not inherently a criticism, though it moves the music farther from my tastes; even granted that disclaimer, “Homecoming” largely registered as loud, incessant, and annoying, without the songcraft to make these qualities fun. If you try to write big dumb rock songs, it’s all the more imperative that the songs are there; and for all of Du Blonde’s hard rock posturing, “Homecoming” just simply does not sound appealing — and not even an Ezra Furman feature can solve a problem that elemental.
