Eskimeaux - Year of the Rabbit
Jan 20, 2018
Gabrielle Smith, the artist formerly known as Eskimeaux, proved herself one of the better and more notable bedroom pop/Bandcamp artists with her excellent 2015 album “O.K.” Followup EP “Year of the Rabbit” could seem slight given the runtime, but it’s such a well-written and sweet set of songs that its brevity doesn’t really matter. Smith’s relaxed vocals expose a set of insecurities and neuroses that are ultimately highly relatable (who among us hasn’t wanted to ask someone “Are you mad are you mad are you mad?”), writing melodies that perfectly match her thoughts. “Year of the Rabbit” isn’t as immediate as its predecessor but it’s likely to creep up on you, and looks likely that Smith’s career will be a fun one to follow.
