“Ten Love Songs” is probably one of the best pure pop albums of this decade, and set my expectations very high for its follow-up. Sadly, “Music For People In Trouble” leaves me cold. Susanne’s vocals and the arrangements are consistently gorgeous, but the approach is so stripped-back and purposefully restrained that the qualities that make her unique are less tangible, and the most noticeable parts don’t stand out for the right reasons – certain flourishes and spoken-word portions interrupt the flow. This is an incredibly nitpicky review but I know that she’s capable of better because we’ve heard her do better. And of course there are good things here – closer “Mountaineers” plays like a conclusion to “Memorial” from “Ten Love Songs,” and it’s utterly flooring. Willing to give this a few more listens in case it grows on me.
