Anna Burch - Quit the Curse
Mar 8, 2018
78
Anna Burch’s strong and well-written debut marks her as an exciting new name in the singer-songwriterly indie rock scene. Without listening to her lyrics, Burch might seem to live up to the title of the opener (“2 Cool 2 Care”) — her vocal style is notably flat and passive. Yet this affect works to her benefit. She has a way of teasing out melodies that could come off as simple in other hands, that instead make them feel unpredictable and engaging. Burch is also an astute songwriter, exploring catchy jangle pop and low-key alt-rock that befit her subtly clever and creative lyricism. “Quit the Curse” may not reinvent the wheel, but it’s a highly appealing and likable debut.
