i would like to preface everything i am saying here by noting that i am extremely biased. however, that bias exists for a good reason; i am not completely irrational, after all.

phil elverum's story, music, and existence. those three things and many other dimensions of who the anacortes, washington songwriter, producer, artist, musician, and all-around amazing human being are have saved my life time and time again. i won't labor you with all the different instances, but phil has pulled me from ... read more

Thanks for the poem—I'm following the thread opened by "creosote" particularly. A certain preservation as coating, skin, surface.

I'd love to read more of your work, but I'm afraid I'm not, nor will ever be, on principle, a user of any of these "social media" sites, Instagram or otherwise... Even AOTY really pushes it for me (recently just made a few changes to minimize the "social" features here).

Now THAT's something to write a poem about!

You're welcome to share your creative work with me, if you'd like. And I'm likewise happy to engage with it, as I can. Around senior year in high school was when I started taking my writing more seriously too, and taking college-level creative writing classes were a big breakthrough for me, so you have a lot to look forward to, I hope.

Yeah, Tram have had a staying power for me, too; that record feels sinister and reverent and yet somehow trembling with its own harmonic unity.

Something interesting I've encountered recently? Reading about anglerfish, who reproduce in such a way that the male fish fuses its face into the much larger female's underbelly. This absorption is for life—and he lives parasitically thereafter off her nutrient supply, while she receives a steady influx of his sperm.

Well, sentimentality, to a certain extent, starts to 'smother' my writing in fantasy, and I no longer can 'angle' it with the precision and sharpness I'd like... At its worst, it refuses any kind of interface—everything becomes flattened by self-pity. That's the trap that frustrates me so.

I do share your love of literature (I'm an English major, after all), and so I've found myself rather transposing most of my creative energy, lately, from creating to responding, which isn't really so different, I think, or even distinguishable. This summer I've basically spent all my time reading; I've never read so many books in such a short period of time. It's been awesome. I guess the important thing is to engage, and that's something I know I'll never abrogate.

Also wanted to let you know I've been listening to 'Heavy Black Frame' these past few days and really enjoying it.

Oh, and also—I'd love to hear more about your creative writing; I'm a disillusioned poet myself, by which I mean, I no longer feel I can avoid the trap of sentimentality in my poetry, so I've really stopped writing altogether, which is a real shame.

Hey, my friend, thanks for much for reaching out; your message was so sweet and was such a pleasure to read. Just saw you rate a comp by The For Carnation, who I've been meaning to get into for a while—maybe this can be that impetus. For me, as you you, I'd imagine, being implicated by a good record demands a certain kind of always inadequate response—and that's what my writing is only ever trying to simulate. Sorry, too, for my tardy response: I've been a little frustrated by this site, lately, and the growing number of users here whose engagement is only ever perfunctory, at best. One listen and dismissal kind of thing. Anyway, that's neither here nor there, and thank goodness for people like you, who form a small group of studied and thoughtful reviewers who keep me excited about music. To you, then, I'd also extend my gratitude—for your fidelity to the hermeneutic encounter we're always already within.

Hi friend! Thanks for the follow! Let’s connect, what would you consider your favorite album of this year so far? 😁

In my opinion, a good taste is more important than a good writer. But don't fret, your reviews are very concise and, as long as they are getting your opinions across, I believe them to be good. :)

I have to say, looking through your top albums, you have very good taste my friend.
Keep up the good work.
