Now, despite the fact that Asian Glow quite literally made my favorite EP of all time with Weatherday (christ Weatherglow is almost 3 years old what the fuck), for some stupid fucking reason I just never decided to listen to anything full-length from either of them, hearing the occasional single recommended by the overlords of corporate greed and bearers of the mark of the beast, also colloquially known as spotify. And I have no particular reason why, sometimes a project is so good I'm ... read more
That third track got me goin o0o00o0o0o0o0 ahhahhahahh
I've heard of Edward Skeletrix before, but knew nothing about him or his work prior to this listen whatsoever. And after seeing the (skewed positive, but nonetheless) mixed response to this release, alongside the genre tags, I was extremely curious to see what I was missing out on. As it turns out, what we have here is a bizarre collage of sounds that don't fall far from the wonky cloud rap / rage tree, while also separating ... read more
FIRST NEW ALBUM REVIEW OF 2025, LET'S GO!
...aaand it's a bad Boldy James album. You know, given his bonkers release schedule as of late, we should have expected something like this to happen. Off of his okay three-record run last year, it's a damn shame that he wasn't able to keep up with this newest release whatsoever. Now, it's one thing to have a more subdued delivery style when rapping, leaning more vibey than hard, but when the production seems just as drained of ... read more
IMMACULATE VIBES all around here, a severely underrated project from an artist I know very little about, who kinda seems to fit in that same lyrical vocab-focused circle one would put a Busdriver or an Aesop Rock into (at least, that's where my mind goes anyway). Extremely verbose and metaphorical raps are paired with these beautiful, punchy beats, that at times share similarities with the production comprising some of Cannibal Ox's eccentric catalog, albeit with a heavier dose of ... read more
Has its moments for sure, even if it gets a bit samey after a little while. Still a pleasant listen all around!
Took me long enough tbh, I've been absolutely loving James Murphy and the gang's studio material for about two years now, and so it feels right to rekindle that flame (especially during the anticipation of a potential new album being in the works) in probably the most grandiose way possible: witness what many believed would be their """final""" curtain call, in all its ooey gooet live album glory.
At a staggering 187 minutes, this is the longest album ... read more
Let the records show that this album has the best song where the chorus is the word "Rolling" repeated over and over, fuck you freddy dursterson you hack
Anyways, WOW what a pivot! Soul Coughing live up to their ever-eccentric identity and completley shift their sonic direction and kinda have this hardcore dnb dance / neo-psych thing going on with their third and final record "El Oso". Needless to say, they out-Becked Beck in terms of shifting genres and mutating (get ... read more
While it isn't as whimsical or intriguing as "Ruby Vroom" was - chalk that up to some retreaded ideas and a slight shift from oddball samples and jazz rock into a more alternative slacker rock direction (albeit said oddball qualities aren't abscent completely) - I still had a blast with this record. Unique ideas tend to lose their uniqueness gradually the more you keep acting on them, and I can kind of see that begin to creep up here (such as the weird vocalizations on ... read more
Love the vibes on this thing, especially the harmonica on "Don't Follow" and the entirety of "I Stay Away" and "Nutshell", the latter being a song I had heard many times before, but quickly grew on me once I gave this thing a full shake. But suprisingly, my favorite song wound up being the closer "Swing on This". To be completely transparent, I understand why it's the lowest rated on here, but honestly it's too much fun for me to care. Just ... read more
Definitely feels like a different band on some fronts compared to Ozzy's Sabbath, although when looking at their previous two records, is such a change of pace necessarily a bad thing? Not at all. Everyone kills it on here, Dio definitely included, and damn do I need to check more of his solo stuff out at some point.
If I had a nickel for every time I was suprised by a furry-adjacent album this year that took heavy inspiration from some of my favorite bands and genres, I would have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice, right?
Edit: (89 -> 94) Yep I get it now, this has got to be one of the weirdly catchiest albums of all time, and I love almost every second of it.
God, you know before listening to "Soul Coughing" out of sheere curiosity due to the funny genre tags and odd cover - after finding it on one of my characteristic deep dives into this wretched website - I figured that whatever I was about to hear was gonna be eccentric and bizarre, but HOLY CRAP I wasn't prepared.
This feels like a ... read more
Started better than "Technical Ecstacy" for sure. I actually enjoyed the first three songs on here quite a bit, with "Never Say Die" and "Junior's Eyes" being immediate standouts and rivaling every song on their last project for sure. But then, the rest of the album just kinda happens, and it becomes abundantly clear how handwaved everything else feels.
