Spiritbox - Tsunami Sea
86

What an insane and beautiful album. In a metal album such as this, it's insane to say that the vocals are the best part as opposed to the sheer energy the tracks give you. Courtney LaPlante's range here is insane, and is a consistent highlight through the emotional highs of the album's runtime. Additionally, the backing tracks are full of energy, and really fill you with a sense of adrenaline, while also not hesitating to take that away in a second. Songs like Fata Morgana and ... read more

Ken Carson - More Chaos
34

I really tried with this one, but I just cannot manage with this album. It's horribly mixed, and the bass is beyond comprehension on every single song. The vocals aren't even on beat or work with any of the entire album, and the fact that it's 21 songs makes it drag for so fucking long. Every song sounds the exact same because there's nothing to set it apart from the rest of the tracks. I just really do not feel any positivity towards this record, because every decision is ... read more

Westside Gunn - 12
68

Kinda mixed on this one. There's some good rapping on here, but the production is full of skits, long drawn-out bits, and an AI intro that don't really do it justice. It really peaks around the middle, but it takes too long to get there in the beginning and end. Flawed, but I can see why some people like it; it just didn't do much for me.

McKinley Dixon - Magic, Alive!
97

In the time since I started using AOTY, McKinley Dixon is perhaps the artist that has grown on me the most. I just absolutely adore everything about his music. His Jazz Rap production is addicting, his lyrical content is seriously deep but oddly hopeful despite its content, and his flow is so smooth and versatile that he can take on a wide range of styles with ease.
From the second Sugar Water dropped, I was beyond excited for this album, and with each single that subsquently released, I was ... read more

Julien Baker - Send A Prayer My Way
66

I can't lie and say country has ever been my thing, but this wasn't all bad. There were pretty decent moments in this album, and some nice writing and instrumentation. The problem is that the tracks start to slowly blend into one another near the end. I really appreciate some of the writing with how realistic it is, but I have a problem telling the tracks apart from one another after the first half or so. It's alright, but I wish it was better.

Miley Cyrus - Something Beautiful
86

This was actually fucking INSANE HELLO??? Previously, when I reviewed Endless Summer Vacation, my thoughts essentially boiled down to "She has talent, but her production kind of betrays it by making it come across as commercial. I held the thought that her next album would be great if she had some change up, and I am PLEASED to say that this is what I was hoping for and more. This record is simply ethereal. From the prelude alone, you know this is some big change-up from ESV. It feels much ... read more

PinkPantheress - Fancy That
92

This is a delightfully addicting mixtape full of lots of fun tracks. I've heard about PinkPantheress every here and then, but I've never sat down and listened to a full project of hers, and I came out of this in a great mood. She's just a great pop artist, with llght-hearted tunes and energetic production. She knows what she wants to make, and she does that really good. Despite this, she still keeps a good range of sounds here. From Girl Like Me to Noises to Romeo, it all is ... read more

Backxwash - Only Dust Remains
80

This album isn't scary; it's brutally realistic in a cathartic type of way. The worldbuilding on each track of this album leads to tons of great moments between the well-produced beats and the near slam-poetry writing. In a way, this entire experience feels like a giant slam poetry session. It's grand and experimental, with lots of moments that hit hard. It's refreshing to something that does not hold back, and is ugly on all fronts as a reflection of the ugliness of the ... read more

Playboi Carti - MUSIC
48

It really cannot be overstated how genuinely exhausting and grating this album becomes. The fact that it's 30 songs makes it feel like a long drive through a tunnel; interesting at first, but boring quick. It's just tiring and sort of repetitive. There's a range of styles, but everything feels like it's running at full speed, so there's no room to even breathe or, god forbid, take in any of the songs beyond certain ad libs or standout lines. There are good ideas, beats, ... read more

Flume - We Live In A Society
66

This is a pretty OK EP that feels like some scraps thrown together. I don't know much of Flume or Peggy's music, but their styles work pretty decently together, and even if the record feels like beats or leftover ideas, it's still not bad, and moreso just there. Diehard fans will love it, and I can appreciate its existence too. Track 1 is genuinely fucking hilarious.

André 3000 - 7 piano sketches
75

Once again people overhating an Andre 3k project because he's not dropping another rap album. Yall need to realize he's not coming back to that for a bit. He's already got an insane production discography, and now he's doing forays off into more experimental territory. The moral of the story is that Andre is just good at whatever he does. These piano sketches aren't much on paper, but the titles do a lot for them. It feels like an anthology of similar feelings, and the ... read more

Sleep Token - Even in Arcadia
69

I don't really get the hate for this like it's fine? It's definitely not hardcore metal, and it may appeal more to the mainstream, but it's still a decent record with good writing, and while the sound may not be thing, along with the vocals of the lead singer, to go out and call it one of the worst albums is kind of crazy. It's a flawed album, sure, and a couple songs drag for a bit, and a couple could be removed, but it's overall a solid enough time. Tracks sort ... read more

Selena Gomez - I Said I Love You First
55

This was not a good time. The main problem with this record is that it just kind of does not know what it wants to be. It goes fom fast paced songs to slow ballads to synthpop songs to tracks trying to recapture the energy that BRAT had, but without the commitment that made BRAT work. The vocals are fine, but feel a bit muffled and self-sabotaged with no highs. The feature choice is also a bit confusing, and kind of stick out from the rest of the record because they feel different. The short ... read more

LISA - Alter Ego
64

I have some incredibly conflicting thoughts on this album. It's an overall super inconsistent record with some great songs but also some real eye-rolles. The 'alter ego/album personality' concept has been done a lot before, but LISA's decision to explore 5 egos make the record feel really chaotic, where even with the personalities, you can't tell who's supposed to be representing what track. Some of the personalities also feel forced, especially the ... read more

clipping. - Dead Channel Sky
84

Okay WOW. I admit that I'm rather new to industrial hip-hop and music similar to this, but I was pretty shocked by how raw this was. Everything felt unfiltered and human, despite the harsh sounds and heavy electronic elements. When the verses go off, they SNAP hard, on tracks such as Change the Channel and Dodger. it kinda reminds me of Bombs Over Baghdad by Outkast, where it feels like you're sprinting full-speed the entire time. At times, the short track lenghs do hinder the ... read more

MIKE - Pinball II
76

I think that this is a step up than the previous MIKE project that dropped a few months back! It's pretty similar in terms of flow, and I'm still not really huge on the short track lengths, but I think the production from Tony Seltzer works really well with MIKE's flows, and the samples that come through, like on the last track, work in the album's favor. I wish it was a bit meatier or songs were condensed so its less of a breakneck pace, but still a good time!

Men I Trust - Equus Asinus
85

This was actually a surprisngly nice album! I've heard about Men I Trust a little bit, but I really enjoy how easy they are to listen to. This album just feels soft and comforting in a way, like the end of a good, but eventful day, and now you're finally on your own for the first time since the morning. The singing here is really pretty, and the soft instrumentation works a lot in its favor, even on entirely instrumental tracks like What Matters Most. I normally wouldn't even be ... read more

Panchiko - Failed at Math(s)
74

This is a pretty solid follow-up to D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L! This is definitely a more refined record, and you can tell it's newer, whereas the previous album felt a bit more timeless. There's a bit more coherence here, but in the process, they kind of lose the unique things that made Deathmetal cool. It's still a solid record, but I think I do prefer Deathmetal to this, just because there's more going on in the previous album. Still, after 20 years of ... read more

Panchiko - D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L
77

First listen on this cult classic. I hope I'm reviewing the right one, but I thought this was pretty neat. I feel like I was somewhat expecting more from this album, since it was hyped up so heavily, but this is a decent indie rock album, with vocals that work, and some instrumentation that makes a couple songs excel. I really enjoyed the title track, as well as CUT. There's a neat little range here, and for a 2000(?) indie album, this was a lot better than most are. This was a ... read more

venturing - Ghostholding
66

I can't lie, this album didn't do much for me. I haven't listened to much shoegaze, admittedly, so that may be part of the reason, but I found this album to be sort of repetitive, which is surprising for Jane Remover. The lyrics are nice, and the instrumentation does work, but I often found myself wishing more was happening between each track. It's not bad, moreso just not really my thing. Highlight tracks are Play my guitar, Recoil, and Sister.
