Chromeo - White Women
74

This album isn't as bad as the critic scores will make you think, but it's also not amazing either. It's just cheesy ish mid-2010s disco music. It's not really deep, but it's permissible because... I don't think they're really trying to be? They're just having fun, and even if the album isn't always great, it's never really bad. There were parts I wasn't really fond of (the moaning in one of the tracks, and also the random Daft Punk ... read more

Lambrini Girls - Who Let the Dogs Out
52

I'm so confused, how the fuck did this get NINETEEN critic scores in a few days? I checked and it seems like they opened for Iggy Pop and Blondie apparently, so I guess publications would know about them, but these all feel pre-written and meant like they were mass sent out to promote the album. I don't think they're industry plants or nepo babies, but something shady is absolutely going down here.

Anyways, Lambrini Girls has a lot of the problems I've got with artists ... read more

Bear Ghost - jiminy

The user score is literally so dramatic. This is not nearly as bad as the top comments will want you to think. Is it a perfect album? No not even close, but it's a decently fun time. It's silly, it's got its moments and it has some fun lyrics. Don't have any expectations and just go in with it; it's overheated for no reason really

Tritonal - Painting with Dreams
40

ughhhhhhhh holy SHIT this was such a nothing album. I don't know what was up in 2016-2018 with EDM artists and making the most boring, derivative, lowbrow music ever, but this album sure is a prime example of it. The first 3 tracks are actually decent, but after that it became really really boring. Every song is trying to be some NCS youtube hit, with singers that wanna sound like Troye Sivan or Sia. It's so generic and boring I was kind of losing my mind by the end. Nothingburger ... read more

Teenage Dads - Midnight Driving

Honestly the user score makes this seem a lot worse than it actually is. This is just perfectly decent Australian indie pop kinda rock but not really. It's a fun time, and while not everything hits hard, it's also not a bad time. Doesn't overstay its welcome, either, since it's just a 21 minute EP.

Baby Bugs - Genesis
67

Don't wanna be too harsh on this album but I thought this one was a little misleading. Autotheist is clearly the best track, and from there the album is like a sine wave, going from slow acoustics to loud punk songs. It's a little jarring, honestly, and kind of hurts the overall project because it feels like it's kind of stuck on what it wants to be. She's got a good voice, at least, and if the album was better arranged and written (some songs have great ideas, but the ... read more

Ethel Cain - Preacher's Daughter
88

Holy. Fucking. SHIT. I thought that maybe Ethel Cain was a little overrated after only listening to her last EPs. Yeah that was BEFORE I listened to Preacher's Daughter. The best way I can describe this album is the quote that goes "art is supposed to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable". This album is a tough listen, but the music itself isn't problem. It's the topic discussed in it. It's a horrifying story about religious trauma, sexual abuse, drug ... read more

Ethel Cain - Inbred
78

Inbred is definitely the best of the 3 Ethel Cain EPs I listened to today. Her writing is at its best in this project, especially in songs like God's Country and Inbred. Her production has also hit a high, and turned into more of an experimental sound. She mixes genres while keeping one sound, and while I think some songs could use a minute or two shaved off, it's still a very respectable project.

Ethel Cain - Golden Age
71

This was definitely a step in the right direction. Listening to Carpet Bed, this, and Inbred in quick succession really displayed her growth as an artist. There's definitely a lot going on here, to the point where I can admire it, despite not being too big on Slowcore. there's definitely a lot to like here, but the main problems I had were the mixes. I felt like oftentimes her voice was hurt by the muffled background sounds.

Ethel Cain - Carpet Bed
64

I thought this one was alright. I think Ethel Cain has a really good voice, but the instrumentals just really weren't my thing. I'm not flaming it, I think it's a solid enough project, but it was kind of over before I could get into it.

Chappell Roan - The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess
91

No yeah this is unironically really good. Ppl like to dog on her bc shes getting popular but this is a very well made album. She has an incredible voice and the production is very good, I don't think its that generic and even when it is kind of that, I think smth else carries it. It's not a perfect 10 but def one of if not the best 2023 pop album
My mind is still kinda fried from the atomic bomb that was one wayne g so I cant articulate

Mac DeMarco - One Wayne G
30

So this has become a joke on AOTY for how fucking big it is. This has more reviews than ratings ffs. So, I actually sat down and listened to it all. *please never do this*. The album actually starts okay for the first hour, until you've heard like 30 or 40 songs and realize you're only 90 minutes in, and there's about 160 songs left. It goes from "pretty solid Ambient ish" material to unfinished demos and beats that make you bored and tired real fast, and you just want ... read more

Avril Lavigne - Love Sux

This album actually makes me genuinely angry in so many ways. There is not a single ounce of creative merit behind this album. Overprocessed vocals, elementary school level writing that acts like it's smart, short songs, GOD AWFUL features, and no originality. This record feels like she's just trying to cash in on big names and trends, including the 2020s pop punk revival. This album is why I don't tell people I like pop punk, so they don't think I like this album. So ... read more

Glass Animals - How to Be a Human Being

Pretty cool alt-ish pop album! I don't think it's perfect or anything, but I really like the worldbuilding it's got through the characters on the cover representing each song, and the songs themselves are pretty cool. Occasionally they can be somewhat weak, but it's not really bad. And when it hits highs, they're really good. Pork Soda, The Other Side Of Paradise, and Take A Slice come to mind, but I thought Youth and Agnes were also really solid. It's just a ... read more

Thank you to @frogofprog for the rec!
Oh my god WHAT. OK so for reference, this was left as a rec on my review on Dark Side of the Moon, where I said how the album gets better when you detach it from the modern scope of "playlisting" and streams, and treated it like one continuous experience. And, yeah, this album definitely applies here. Two tracks here, each one representing a side of the album. I honestly didn't even realize there were multiple songs within each track, because ... read more

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

Okay, yeah, this album is actually incredible. The craftsmanship that goes behind Daft Punk's music needs to be studied, and this album is no different. It's wild that such a long album is able to grip me this strongly, but RAM has proved itself to be one of those exceptions. From the very first track, this is a vibe, and the further in you go, the better it gets. While not every song is an absolute masterpiece, there's this undeniable flow from front to back that makes it a ... read more

Ellie Goulding - Higher Than Heaven
71

This is a perfectly okay album. It's consistently "not amazing, but decent". It's very safe and commercial, from the writing to the sanitized electro synthpop sound, but it's not like it's bad or anything. Ellie Goulding has a nice voice, and the production is servicable enough to make the songs all work. It's no masterpiece, but it's hard to knock it down. It's just a 7/10 good mainstream pop album, and better than what I expected from an artist ... read more

Jadu Heart - Hyper Romance

Can't lie, I wasn't really a fan of this one. Everything I heard about this album was different than what it actually was to me. Having heard Metal Violets, seeing the raw album cover, and the album being HYPER romance, I was expecting something a lot more energetic and cohesive than what this is. It's not necessarily bad, but it feels sort of uninspired. Every track feels different from the last, but not in a good way. The male singer's voice is alright, but it feels too ... read more

The Hoosiers - The Trick to Life

Yeah this isn't really all that good. Okay I mean it's not egregiously bad, and I do like Worried About Ray/Worst Case Scenario (And, if we wanna count rereleases, Rules, aka the song that got me interested in listening to this), but part of this feels just kind of boring. Like, The Hoosiers want to be quirky and rock-but-also-not-rock, while still trying to appeal to the mainstream. The vocals are pretty decent, but also way too British to the point where it reminds me of Lovejoy (in ... read more

Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

This is an album I've been familiar with for a very long time, even before I knew what this album was. Everyone has those artists or albums that they've heard a good chunk of because of their parents. Lauryn Hill was one of these. Whenever my mom is driving me somewhere, there's a decent chance Lauryn Hill and/or the Fugees would show up. So, before I even stepped into this, I already knew a lot more than I realized. Ex-Factor, Doo Wop, To Zion, Can't Take My Eyes Off of You ... read more
