Ok what the fuck Rina Sawayama is so fucking good yall. This is the kind of pop music that I love. Stuff that feels upbeat, but it's not devoid of soul. Her voice and the beats are dripping with soul and personality that really makes it memorable. Seriously, this is an insane EP, because in just 24 minutes, it's able to touch so many bases. I just had a smile on my face the whole way through, it's wild how she was able to do this in her DEBUT. I'm looking forward to Hold ... read more
Pretty cool. Not into chiptune as much as I used to but I had a good time with it. It's fun, well produced, and while not my thing, still cool.
God bless the Pet Shop Boys for making an album in the 80s that actually is cohesive! This was a breath of fresh air after being kind of burned out on 80s synthpop music. A unique voice, cool instrumentation, songs written about more than one thing, and actual nuance in production. That's not to say it's perfect, but this is the kind of synthpop from the 80s that I LOVE. Maybe I just need to check late 80's things.
This album feels like the perfect mix between the unhinged bullshittery of their debut and the good, revolutionary writing of Toxicity. The result? A loud, fast-paced album that keeps up an insane energy from start to end. When it hits, it hits, especially in songs like Bubbles, Streamline and Pictures. There's no bad part here; it's just powerful the whole time through, and really gets your blood pumping.
I hate that I like this, but I'm also really glad this exists. This is how you do comedic music that works. It's a serious LP with actual quality, but it's also not taking itself seriously. It's so overly confident and goofy, it crosses the line from irony to seriously good. Not everything hits, but when it hits, you better believe it HITS. BUSSIT, THE BADDEST and OMNITRIX were definite highlights. I'm reluctant to say this is a favorite yet, but it is really solid.
Ok this type of 80s cheesy pop-ish rock-ish music is starting to get seriously grating to me. It all sounds the same with little variation. It sounds... okay, but nothing from it is really memorable at all. Alphaville better.
Okay, Oingo Boingo is actually really solid. Just A Lad was really cool, but Dead Man's Party is just a little better to me. I think this goofy rock sound fits him really well. It still feels silly, but still very cohesive and complete. Like, it has a lot of elements of my favorites. I can't believe it either, but Oingo Boingo kinda fucks.
This just in: Lorde is still good. I don't get the lower score on this, she's still got a great voice and a strong production. I didn't like it as much as Melodrama, but it's still very solid. Like, she's clearly evolved, and this is a really emotional record for her. It's not my favorite thing in the world, but still objectively good.
Score is both serious and for the meme
Okay, I think I have to admit it. A lot of 80s synthpop albums I've listened to have honestly not been great. I'm like, really shocked by this. I love synthpop in general, but pretty much everything pre-1983 I've heard has just been... okay? I feel like it's a me problem now, because first I couldn't get into Rio, then I couldn't do DM, and now this???
Okay, for some goods, I like the wide variety of instruments; hearing some ... read more
I bring a "media literacy required" kind of vibe to the function that news outlets don't like
Oingo Boingo is the most unhinged 80s band I've heard yet, for a lot of reasons. The production is insane, it feels like he's having a mental breakdown mid-track, without fail. The stuff the songs are about are actually really creative. Everyone knows about Little Girls by now, but he keeps up this "messed up thing from perspective of someone else/done in a satirical ... read more
See, the thing is, I know I'm kind of trashing on this, but it's mainly my opinion. I've never liked excessively horny songs on anything. Even from my favorites. When cupcakKe steps away from the horny side, it becomes actually something I really like, like 2 Minutes. She's genuinely good from a creative writing standpoint, and the beats are great, but again... I cannot handle the horny stuff I'm not built for it. It's so out of pocket that it becomes desensitizing ... read more
I was really expecting to like this, considering that I love Jhariah's music, but it's just kind of decent. The instrumentals are great, but the writing isn't anything special, and the singer's voice doesn't really work on everything. When it works, it works, but when it doesn't, it really doesn't, honestly. I liked Necromancin Dancin and Starkiller, but the rest were just kinda decent. Great for someone, but not for me.
This was honestly really good. 100 Best albums of all time? Idk, but this is like one of the star examples of pop albums. It's fun, has good writing, a unique/enjoyable sound, and a great voice. There are a few lower points, but they're interspersed between such high points that it's just a fun time overall. It's like Kylie Minogue X Marina. Pop music that's enjoyable but not safe.
Wow, okay, I'm the first person to put up a review for this album. tea is a very unknown band. The only way you might recognize them is that the song "Satellite" was featured as the song in the finale of the newest Futurama season (i think). I decided, since I love Satellite so much, why not listen to the whole thing? And this album was a treat. It's like, the most indie, self-produced album ever, but it adds a lot of charm to the overall thing, The imperfections serve in ... read more
I was expecting something completely different from MGMT, but this is still decent. I've never been huge on mainly acoustic songs, but the production on here makes this a solid listen. It's well-written, and the instrumentation is cool, but I couldn't really get that invested in it. Cool concept, decent songs, really good ending song, but I think I'm gonna enjoy Oracular Spectacular more when I get to it.
I can't do this anymore. This album is a shitshow and a half... and that's why, in my opinion, it kinda works. Wham! builds themselves up here on this album to be a bunch of cheesy egotistical fuckboys who don't take themselves seriously... and that makes it kind of fun. It's delightfully unserious, and while it does have its definite flaws (a lot of filler tracks of instrumental mixes), it's overall just a vibe. I wouldn't listen to a lot of these on their own, ... read more
NOTE: this is my first listen and will probably be outdated within a few months.
I... don't really get the hype on this one. I mean, it's great objectively; Kate Bush has a great voice and a good production. But this feels less like an album and more like a college kid's indie film that got uploaded to YouTube, and all the comments are talking about how it's better than all of modern Hollywood. Like, I don't know, it feels like it takes itself too seriously, instead of ... read more
This is definitely one of the... weirder ones i've done. I went into this expecting some pop-like songs and walked out feeling like I just went to a rave, but that's not a bad thing. Stromae has great vocals, and covers a lot of stuff here, from abandonment to politics to whatever the FUCK Humain a l'eau is. But I do think some stuff works better than others. It's hard to explain but some songs are just kind of missing that special something that makes it stick, but when it ... read more
Why did this have to be so good dawg I can never show this to anyone ever.
Mook is one of those albums I'm secretly a sucker for. Artsy, pop-like, theater kid core, and just grand in general. It's very full of itself, but it's almost cathartic. The beginning of this album is loud, intense and heavy, until there's a noticeable shift halfway in, to a more subtle, acoustic sound. It almost feels like it's split into two parts, where the first half is a serious emotional ... read more
For a debut album, this is really solid! Tyla has an amazing voice, and I'm in love with some of these beats. This project is cohesive and has a sound down, but occasionally it gets repetitive. There were a couple songs that I swore I had just heard two songs ago. I love this chill genre, so I had a great time. Even if it's safe, it works, and sounds great mainly just because of her vocal range.
